View Full Version : System Config Utility doesn't run

My MS Win XP Home SP1 System Configuration Utility
(msconfig.exe) does not run when I click the link in "Help
& Support/Tools/SCU/Open SCU". I also tried to run
msconfig.exe directly in "start/run" but no luck.

The msconfig.exe file is ver. 5.1.2600.1106. I have the
same problem on two separate computers, each running
(naturally) its own original, store-bought,activated MS
Win XP Home. I am logged in as the administrator on both
machines. I must be doing something wrong, but what???

Thanks!

This can be caused by an incorrect BOOT.INI file. In particular, having
multiple [Operating Systems] sections. BOOT.INI is a hidden file in the
root directory of the C: drive. It can be accessed via Notepad, or by
going to Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery and clicking
the Edit button.

Doug,
Thanks for replying to my post.

Here is my boot.ini file. Can you tell me what to
change? I am hesitant to modify it without knowing what I
am doing. I periodically save a copy of the partition to
another drive using Partition Magic - could that have
changed this file somehow?? I also use the Norton
utilities to check the disk, etc.

Thanks, Brooke

Assuming that XP is installed on C: and is the first partition on that hard
disk, then this would be your BOOT.INI

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

Note: the last line, multi(0)........... should not wrap.
