Recently I have received some .DOC files from a relative which I can only
open by transferring them to my desktop and changing the access to Word. On
the other hand my wife can just click an them and they open in Wordpad. I
thought I had this on my PC but cannot find it.I am sure it was there when I
had the PC! I have Notepad, but this produces a file with all the code
included. This makes it unusable and not suitable to print.

TIA

Dell does if you ask.

The security patch below should put it back.

Found some Wordpad entiries on XP disc supplied....Couldn't run them..there
were 4 entries.
I could open them in Notebook but they were not readable..just seemed so
much gibberish..code ?
I copied them into a folder on my PC.
This appeared to be a BIG mistake...........because although I did not try
to run them I then found I could not go to my email.... Fortunately found
that OE was no longer listed as my choice of email source.......Gawd knows
how but this had been blanked out when I looked at the properties..I tried a
system reinstall point but it told me nothing had changed !

Good news was that by reinstating OE in the correct box via properties and I
was able to return to my email provider via the program.

Whew..........maybe I will just do without Wordpad !!

Why don't you just search your disk for wordpad.exe and see if it is
on your system or not.

It is a Windows Protected File, so even if you accidentally deleted
wordpad.exe, it should be replaced.

It sounds like you may have just deleted the shortcut from
Accessories, which is easy to add back after you can find
wordpad.exe. Locating a single file on a system should not be
difficult using the Windows search tools.

It is usually here:

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\

If it is not there search the entire HDD for it, replace the shortcut
in Accessories.

Well if Wordpad is a Windows protected file, would running 'SFC
/scannow' in a command window fix this problem?

If wordpad.exe is deleted and not replaced, WFP is broken.

When WFP is working properly and using wordpad.exe as an example of a
protected file that somehow gets deleted, I deleted wordpad.exe and
WFP quickly and silently replaced it with this event in the Event Log:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Windows File Protection
Event Category: None
Event ID: 64002
Description:
File replacement was attempted on the protected system file c:\program
files\windows nt\accessories\wordpad.exe. This file was restored to
the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of
the system file is 5.1.2600.5584.

I don't count on sfc /scannow and never even suggest it, but it is
often a first suggestion as a shot in the dark when some problem is
not understood. If WFP is working properly, sfc /scannow should find
nothing to do. If it does, something else is wrong. I personally
have never used it to fix any problem and will never even suggest it.

When sfc /scannow is suggested, the next message will invariably be -
it asks me for a CD and I don't have one, it didn't do anything or I
still have the same problem.

After that will come "Try running sfc /scannow in Safe Mode", but sfc /
scannow will not run in Safe Mode.

It is a good time consumer though.

I don't know quite how..but I did find some wordpad programs and created a
shortcut for the desk top........
AND BINGO it now works.........I now have to wait until my neice sends me a
dot DOC file to see if it automatically finds it to open the DOC !!

That's nice.

To get it working "right", click Start, Run and in the box enter:

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\

click OK and that should open the folder where wordpad.exe is.

Right click wordpad.exe, Send To, Desktop which will create a shortcut
on your desktop.

If you already have a working desktop shortcut, you can just use it.

Right click the working desktop shortcut to wordpad.exe and rename it
to:

WordPad

Left click the desktop WordPad and hold the mouse button down and
while still holding the left mouse button down, drag the WordPad on
top of the Start button (don't let go of the mouse button), then drag
it to Programs (don't let go of the mouse button) then drag it to
Accessories and release the left mouse button (do let go of the mouse
button) to drop the WordPad where it belongs.

Be sure to keep holding the left mouse button down until you are ready
to drop it into Accessories where it belongs.

When you are done, you can delete the desktop WordPad shortcut (or
leave it if you like it).

If you make a mistake, clean up any accidents and try again.

Thanx to all who replied to my post......

I find I do indeed have wordpad and the KB loaded that reinstalled/updated
it.

I find my REAL problem now is that when I click on the "open with" section
via properties Wordpad does not appear as an option ! Cannot see where this
list of programs is generated so that I can add Wordpad.
I have solved the problem of dot DOC files by simply opening them all in
Word :-))

A program doesn't have be listed as an option to be chosen. You can
choose any program (.exe file) by clicking Browse and browsing to it.

True, but 'open with' doesn't work the same with all extensions.

On my system (WXP SP2), for example, for a .txt file, "open with" it extends
the context window with two suggestions above the line (Notepad and Wordpad)
and one below the line (Choose Program ...). For a .doc file, it closes
the context window and opens an 'Open With' window.

I think the OP wants the context window to be extended with one or more
suggestions plus the 'choose program ...' suggestion.

How can that be done?

Google "customize right click menu" to find methods to change what is
listed. There are also programs that avoid editing the register.

I'm not Thoy, the person with the problem; I replied to him. Please be
careful to reply to the correct person.

And note that changing what's on the right-click menu is not what he
asked about. He asked about what he sees after clicking "Open with."

As you point out in the sentence quoted below, it *is* there. But you
have to browse to the folder that contains it. That's what "browse"
means. You change folders in the browse window to get to the folder
that contains the program you are looking for--in this case, Wordpad.

You should find it in \Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories
