View Full Version : BSoD at Startup

My computer (running XP MCE) was recently infected with "Security Tool"
- a rogue "antivirus" program which bombards the user with warnings
instructing you to buy their software. My antivirus software (Panda)
wouldn't open, so I used their online scanning service instead, which
worked. Unfortunately, while it was still scanning I got a BSoD with
the following message:

> A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent
> damage to your computer.
>
> Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup
> utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any
> updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and
> then restart your computer.
>
> STOP error: 0x00000024I restarted the computer but it got to the Windows splash screen and the
same BSoD came up. I tried again and the same thing happened. I also
tried in safe mode, but it restarted immediately after reaching the
splash screen.

Luckily, I have another HDD with a windows installation, which I was
able to boot from. I was able to access files on my other drive with no
problems. I carried out another virus scan on the affected hard drive,
which removed the virus. I have tried checking the disk for errors from
both my other installation and by using chkdsk in the recovery console
of the installation DVD. I even tried fixmbr, but nothing had any
effect. Can I fix this installation, or do I have to carry out a repair
install?

Last time I carried out a repair install (it was on my second HDD),
media center stopped letting me watch TV and XP -always- insists that
there are updates to install at shutdown (as far as I can tell, it wants
to install the same updates over and over). Is there any way I can
prevent this if I do need to carry out a repair install?

Any help is appretiated
Calum

You're best bet to startup from a BSOD is to use the "Last known good"
boot option.

Once in Windows, use NirSoft's tiny program, "BlueScreenView" to tell
you what is causing the crash:

BlueScreenView ~50 KB - View BSOD (blue screen) crash information
