I have tried creating a new user account so that someone else can use my
computer. Their account appears at the log in stage as well as "guest
account".

When they click it and enter the password a message comes up.

"Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check
that you are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning
correctly. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator.
DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified."

The same message comes up when the guest account has been clicked. When the
message box closed, the list of accounts comes back up again. The only
account that can be chosen is my one (I'm the administrator).

I'm not on a network. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you are wanting an account for use to log in locally
there is no advantage whatsoever in using the Guest
account or an account that (you believe) is only in the
Guests group.
Just define a limited (Users groups member) for local
login, since any account that is a guest only will actually
be a Users member if the local login is going to succeed.

Hi Roger - thanks for replying.

I've created a limited account but it still gives the same error message as
I described before. No account that I create (limited or guest) is able to
log on to the computer.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks.

Hi,

This is pretty unkind.

Are there any leads in the event logs?
Is this Home or Pro?

Logged in as admin check into the properties of the new
accounts to see if for some chance they are configured
to use a profile path or if home dir is specified.
This one is a long, long shot.
For this you may need to use lusrmgr.msc (start/run)

Also, you could go into the System applet of control panel,
go to the Advanced tab, User profiles, and if any of the new
accounts have had a profile created it is listed. Check that
the type is local. Another long shot.

The permissions on C:\Documents and Settings may
be incorrect. The security on this, and on the \Default User
subdir should be System and Administrators Full, Users,
Power Users and Everyone Read & Execute.

How long since you did successfully define an account ?
Is antivirus up-to-date?

Roger
