Type the name of the Command Interpreter

Hi

I have a XP Home PC and it will not boot, I get a message

"Missing Command Interpreter
Type the name of the Command Interpreter
(e.g. C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)C:>"

What steps can I take to fix this, I tried typing in the example but
it did not work, I just got the same message back.

Remove the floppy disk from your disk drive before booting.

I've seen this style of error message usually when some type of
virus / spyware "embeds" itself in your startup.

there is no Floppy in the drive, nor a disk in the CD/DVD drive.

Hi

my PC is fully protected with Kaspersky AV and Internet security, and I have
scanned the PC with the
Kaspersky boot disk, it tells me I have no issues.

The message you see is generated when the boot environment has reverted to
DOS/Win9x. I can think of these scenarios where this might happen:
- You have a floppy disk formatted under Win9x in your disk drive.
- You booted the machine with a Win98 CD and commenced the installation
process.
- You are attempting to boot from a hard disk other than your WinXP disk.
- You have several partitions on your disk and something changed the active
partition or hid the system partition.
- Virus/malware interference.
To restore the WinXP boot environment, do this:
1. Boot the machine with your WinXP installation CD.
2. Select "Repair" when prompted.
3. Select "Recovery Console" when prompted.
4. Select the drive for your WinXP installation when prompted.
5. Enter the Administrator's password when prompted.
6. Type the following commands:
fixboot
fixmbr
bootcfg /rebuild
7. Reboot the machine.
