View Full Version : Changing picture file sizes

XP Pro SP3. OE6

I know that if I right-click on a JPEG and choose SEND, I have the option
( with Outlook Express 6) to " Make pictures smaller ? "
Does anyone know what program actually does that ?

Family is just back from a trip and I'm trying to get all ( 2000?) pictures
onto one CD to send via US mail. (Recipient doesn't have DVD in PC)
Currently each file is about 2mb and I tried a few - they get down to
50-200kb each. That's just what I need but I can't open one email and attach
2000+ pictures - OE hangs. So I do a bunch, save, more, save etc.

I'd like to run that app directly - if I can.
Normally what I do is open picture folder- select some -SEND via email
message - and I get that prompt. I elect to "make smaller" , then Save all
attachments into a SMALL folder. Repeat until done.
If I open Task manager while it's making the small files and right-click on
Send Mail process, I can choose 'take me to process' and it shows
explorer.exe racking up CPU time.
Anyway to do this directly ?
So if I had 5000 pictures in Folder A and want small ones in Folder B, I'd
....
right-click on Folder A and choose 'Make smaller'.

The pictures are about 5gb as-is so would be 10 CD's. They COULD do that but
waste of time . If shrunk - easier at both ends.

I DID try that RESIZE program but user has to choose the final size. For
2000 pictures that might be all different sizes to start out with that would
be tedious. For some that are "smaller" than selected size already, it
actually makes them ( and the file size) larger. Using OE they ALL get
smaller in file size without me checking before/after image size.

I travel a lot and I figured if app known, then in the future I could use
this again.
In the meantime, the only way for me to do it is to open OE, attach all the
pictures - wait to process - then "Save all Attachments" back to HDD - wait
, then close/cancel mail message. It works fine but I thought that there
was an easier way.
Maybe not.

Have you looked at Picasa 3 from Google? Under the create menu there's
an option to create a gift CD and it's options allow you to resize the
pictures so they take up less room. The smallest it will go is 640 X
480. It will also scan your pictures and give you an estimate as to how
many CD's it would require for the selected photos.

I know some people don't think too highly of Google, but Picasa is one
of the best free photo management/editing programs I've used. I use a
Kodak Z-740 digital camera, and I've ditched the Easy Share software
that came with it and use Picasa exclusively.

On the XP Resize Power toy there is an Advanced button that gives you
the option to make pictures smaller, but not larger.

And in the utility, you don't pick the final picture size, you pick the
screen size it will fit on. This works well for pictures of different
sizes. The picture keeps the same proportions. Landscape mode
pictures are scaled so that the width fits the screen and portrait mode
so that the height fits the screen.

Pretty much the only people I would send 2000 pictures to would be my
mother or my sister, or one of my wife's sisters. I would copy them to
a thumb drive and then send the thumb drive.

I'm not SENDING 2000 pictures - just using OE to make those 2000 pictures
SMALLER file size. I THEN save the smaller ones and cancel mail message.

I gave you links for two freeware picture resizers that will do every
picture in a folder at one time with a few mouse clicks. How easier do you
