View Full Version : BACKWEB

I am curious if I should delete any files and or folders
that I find labled Backweb. I have read about backweb
being a form of spyware and that it isnt essential to the
operation of windows. Can I and should I delete backweb?
Is it spyware? Will I suffer some dire consequence if I
delete these files, or should I leave them be?
Thanks

Backweb is nothing to do with windows. However, its not spyware or anything
nasty in and of itself. It's a program that allows data and content to be
downloaded in the background on a system and one example is the antivirus
software I use at work has an option to use it to download antivirus updates
and virus news. Pretty harmless in itself then.
If you find backweb on your system you shouldn't assume its evil and must be
destroyed, instead ask yourself - "What put it here? And why?". If you find
the program that installed backweb is doing something you dislike then you
need to remove that as well as backweb.
I hope that helps.

Spybot treats BackWeb lite as a spybot. I am paranoid, so that in itself
would be enough for me to remove it.

To be noted:
Microsoft Update downloads updates in the background,
then informs you when it's ready to be installed. As
does MSN. I don't know if they do so using Backweb, but
my point is you may have some unlikely sources for
downloading.
(I myself have disabled Microsoft Update's downloading.
I'm on a dial-up, and would rather choose when to spend
that bandwith, and want to know what's downloading and
when!)

You can always quarantine it and then wait to see what stops working. If
you don't notice any negative results after like a week or two, then delete
it what the heck.

And in the scenario I mentioned above where backweb is what handles the
antivirus updates?

Robert I am just curious, what anti-virus software do you use?

If my AV software comes with spybots (not just usage tracks), what does that
tell me?

At work? F-Secure. The server version comes with Backweb as one of the
optional (e.g. you have to choose this during install) ways of downloading
updates for your whole network. If you don't like backweb they have other
choices.

I don't believe backweb to be a spybot. It can be used maliciously but then
you can kill someone by beating them up with a baseball bat and that doesn't
make all baseball bats murder weapons.

All I'm saying is that Spybot detects it as a spybot. I trust the Spybot
application, so i would not use backweb. We all have different likes and
dislikes, and i agree to disagree with you. If it suits your purpose, enjoy!
Cheers ;)

I think the company that made Backweb must have a terrible marketing
department. I mean, "Backweb"??! If that doesn't just SOUND like something
bad I don't know what does. The name cracks me up, anyway.
Probably Spybot detects it because this program wasn't made by the company
that made the anti-virus program (it's a third party thing, made by Backweb
Technologies apparently), and so ANY program could be using Backweb, and
Spybot doesn't have a way to determin what program is using this downloader,
so it's up to the user to decide. It's like my Pest Patrol spyware killer
detects a key logger everytime, but in fact it is just part of my laptop's
touchpad, and I sure don't want to delete that!

The following link explains Backweb, BackWeb Lite, and what it does and how
to clean it up:

When I say Spybot detects it, I don't mean that it does so in a false
positive way. If you look thru the list of "bad products", Backweb is one of
them. But like I said, to each his own. You might even want to load Gator to
help you while on the net.

Ha, yeah, gator and that purple gorrila Bonzai Buddy. I also had backweb on
a computer, and realized that it was part of an auto-update for a Logitech
mouse. So I uninstalled the update and got rid of Backweb. It had another
strangley named dll included; it was called Iadhide.dll (Why the heck would
a mouse have any reason to auto-update anway!? Ridiculous.)
