View Full Version : should I install MSE?

Cindy
December 27th 09, 07:40 PM
I am using XP 5.1 with service pack 3 - outlook express 6.
I am using AVG 9.0 - Adware 8.1, spybot and spyware blaster.
I could use some advice please - should I remove all of these programs, or
some of these programs and install Microsoft's Security essentials (MSE). I
have researched on the computer and see good comments about MSE.
IF I do take off the programs I have and install MSE do I also need
Microsoft Defender.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Is this a joke? MS does more spying on your computer than anyone
else, especially since XP. I would not trust ANY "security"
programs from them a billionth of a millimeter and IMHO anyone
who uses them is insane.

I trust you also use a **NON-MS** firewall.

If you use the MS one, disable it and get a real one, plenty to
choose from. Then you'll have pretty much have covered all the
bases, within reason.

One could have twenty security programs, but really, /thinking/
while on-line and checking the addresses you end up at
(willingly or not) and never running any exe's (disguised or
not) while online is what matters. I don't even have my AV on
when I'm online, I only scan everything I DL'd afterwards, and I
have never gotten any malware.

Isn't this group called - Help and support? - Since I do not
really have anyone to ask that is more knowlegable than me I thought I would
ask on the newsgroup. Everyone here has always been very helpful, and
certaintly knows more than I do.

I would have appreciated some suggestions on what programs to use

Much of your question is based on preference. All I can do is tell you
what I am doing.

I was using Avast & Windows Defender. There is nothing wrong with this
combo IMHO, but a few months ago, I removed Avast and installed MSE
(Microsoft Security Essentials). This is an AV program with Windows
Defender included. Depending on your OS, it will either remove, or disable
your current Windows Defender program and let MSE take over.

You can keep, and I would keep, SpywareBlaster. I would also recommend
this program. It does not run in the background, but is a good tool to run
on occasion, especially if you thing you may be infested.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.40
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

You can keep AdAware and SpyBot if you wish. I don't think they are really
a necessity if you have the above as they were a while ago.

While I am an MS MVP, I must add that I am in no way an advocate for MS
and feel the same pain as most posters do. That said, I believe MSE /is/ a
reliable program and can assure you that MS does /not/ gather any info
from you by using it.

The final decision is up to you.

MS is not in the malicious software detection/removal business. MSE
is their "answer" to including at least something resembling a AV
product with Windows to the "Why doesn't Microsoft have a AV product?"
question.

If you see good comments, they are from people that for some reason
really trust MS to provide them a good computing experience.

Just because the AV product comes from MS doesn't make it good. The
manufacturing of malicious software tools is not their job. You
should stick with malicious software products that come from companies
where that is all they do.

MSE only "cares" about 3498 files that are important to MS and does
not detect laughably simple things that other scanning softwares take
in stride (somebody where AV IS their business). It is so easy to
fool - and even the simplest things go undetected.

MSE prefers to add programs and processes to your system consuming
resources (CPU cycles and memory) that could certainly best be spent
on more enjoyable things.

However, MSE claims to be green, therefore it is automatically good -
it has the green word. I don't want something green protecting my
system. I want something mean and ruthless.

MSE is not even anywhere on my list of "tools" to use on a system
where their might be or could be malicious software.

The "right" tool depends on the protection you need and your Internet
habits. There is no "best" single tool. You need to find maybe 2 or 3
that are right for your environment and stick with them.

It is also possible to overprotect your system to the point it suffers
from too much protection software.

There is absolutely no harm in downloading and installing it. You can leave
it run if you choose or
just run it when you want. Microsoft doing spying is merely a comment from
someone without expertise
or very emotional, and has no basis of fact whatsoever. I think you'll like
MSE.

You have all you need except you did not mention a firewall. I
said use any FW you want EXCEPT the one that comes with Windows.
You might have to try 2 or 3 to find the one YOU really like,
but that's the typical way these things happen.

Clearer now?

1. Don't top-post.

2. As they used to say, wake up and smell the rotting meat.
Since the mid-90's there have been concerns about MS' sticking
their nose into where it's not welcome. Ever since XP came out,
Windows has been phoning home every time you're online, and
several Windows features are expressly designed to keep tabs on
your computer's configuration and software, along with other
things that just might "happen" to slip into the data stream.

Ever heard of the infamous - and never fully resolved/explained
- "NSA backdoor" key in the Windows OS code?

Here's something to read:

I /strongly/ suggest you read all the *comments*.

Please tell us more about this phone home feature, things that might
have slipped in and the NSA backdoor key in the Windows OS code.

I have already read some of the rumors.

How I can verify if my system is afflicted with these maladies or not
and what to do about it if any confirmation tests you can supply
return positive results? How do I detect it and what do you
recommend?

Hopefully something to determine with certainty besides...If you have
Windows installed, you have it... just Google "Windows NSA" kind of
things. I already did that.

I already told you not to top-post. Can't you read, are you a
moron, or do you just like to be "creative" and "different"?

The internet is full of factual (/and/ fictitious) information.
It is up to you to process it. Do so and leave me alone. No one

No problem with top posting when message thread is short, IMO.

Don't read if you dislike top posting. I am not under your command.
It is not a matter of agreeing with you. It is a matter of fact or fiction.
Leave you alone??? I'm nowhere near you. I reserve the right to respond
to false and misleading trash that some people may believe.
Post facts not your emotional garbage.
