What should i do?

I purchased XP Pro OEM for system builders on E-bay in July '09 and it
worked ok the first time I installed it on the computer system i built. It
looked genuine, had the hologram cover and came with a COA label with the
product key on it.

I recently had to reinstall XP Pro and there was no option to activate nor
was i prompted to activate it. When i ran msoobe.exe it stated that windows
had been activated. I downloaded and installed all the updates and when it
installed kb905474 (WGA update) I was informed that i might have a pirated
copy. I didn't think that was right so i reinstalled XPpro. This time I hid
the kb905474 update (msoobe still said windows was activated) , and
installed all the other updates. XP Pro was running fine then my curiosity
got the better of me and I installed the kb905474 update. Bam! Black screen
again, telling me about illegal pirates.

I went to the validation website, the one where ms tries to sell you a
genuine copy for a bargain-hunter's dream price of $149.99, no, They don't
try to "sell you", they trick you into thinking that buying a new copy is
the only option by clever web page design. Anyway, after drilling down i
found out that the product key I had is actually a "Volume License" product
key and it had been blocked.

Do you think this situation would qualify for the "complimetary windows
genuine advantage kit" where i send them the CD and purchase receipt and
wait for them to tell me if I qualify? I already filled out the online form
but have not sent anything.

Should I try to contact the reseller on Ebay or file a complaint on Ebay?

Should I just not install kb905474 and continue to use it?

Should I take my medicine and buy a genuine copy?

You realize you got taken and you are still asking the questions on a
peer-to-peer newsgroup?

Try it (WGA kit); File a complaint on eBay and have them contact the
reseller; installing KB905474 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905474) is
optional - but you already know you have an illegitimate copy and who knows
when it might bite you again; You should get a genuine copy somehow - in my
opinion.

Sure sounds like you were ripped off.

Why did you buy this is in the first place? Please describe this PC. Did
it come pre-isntalled with an OS, and if so, which one?

Thank you for your prompt reply. I basically wanted to put this situation out there for many
people to see in the event that I might be missing something of relevance. Feedback. Your
feedback is valuable and I will probably do just as you said. I don't quite understand what
you meant by "still asking the questions on a peer-to-peer newsgroup?". As opposed to,
posting this in a MS technet forum? I am in the process of realizing i got taken and i will
take what is relevent from the replies here and discard the rest. Like the person that
replied after you, repeating what you said and asking questions that i had already answered
if he had read my post.

Have a Happy New Year

Oops. Disregard that last paragraph. I now see you built this PC
yourself. My bad.

Here is my recommendation. Purchase an XP *Home* installation CD:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116511

Ninety bucks, including shipping. It is doubtful you need XP Pro as
there are few differences between Home and Pro. Plus there are a number
of tweaks to give Home more of a "Pro-like" functionality.

You can also contact Microsoft. If you report the person who sold you
the bad copy, they might give you a complimentary license/CD to run XP:

http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell/reports/report.aspx

Contact Ebay, too. It can't hurt to try to get your money back.

Then again, there is always the rare possibiliy of a false positive. Do
you have information on this Ebay seller? Check the feedback. Complaints
from others? Or a stellar reputation? Power seller?

microsoft takes software piracy
pretty seriously.

microsoft does provide assistance
to those who inadvertently purchased
pirated software.

don't have the link but you can
begin by going to microsoft.com

The fact that you were able to validate the OS the first time it was
installed leads me to think that it was a legit CD.

Was any hardware changed? If so, it may "think" it's being installed on
a second machine and therefore invalid.

I'd try the phone activation...probably nothing to lose at this point

Is this what you are looking for:

Include as much info as possible. I have used it before and received a
response back from Microsoft.
