Recently a virus corrupted my cmd32.exe winxp file and i
constantly keep getting a message saying that the file is
missing whenever windows loads. I have the original WINXP
professional cd but i don't know how to replace the exact
file.

The path location is
c:\WINXP\sytem32\cmd32.exe

also is it possible to reinstall windows w/o loosing
previous programs installed and other files on the hard disk?

Thanks in advance

The file is actually a virus by itself. Windows uses=20
cmd.exe, not cmd32.exe.=20

Remove remnants of KWBot.Worm from the Registry and File System
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_clean_kwbot.htm

Note: You'll have to disable your antivirus program before running the =
repair.

No, it didn't. You didn't have a cmd32.exe file before. That file *is* =
the virus.

You don't want to replace it. If you're getting a message that Windows =
can't find it, that's just a remnant of the virus that also needs to be =
deleted. See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, Clean KWBot.Worm Registry =
entries. Also read=20

I believe cmd32.exe was the virus. Here's a link that will tell you
how to get rid of the message:
