Hi,
File system searching is broken. when looking for files
containing a string, windows repeatedly finds no files. I
know there are files containing the strings, I created
them to test the search. This used to work. Is there any
way to reinstall / reset the searching function?
Alternatively I could install something that works like
Cygwin or linux.
cheers

See http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_fix_search.htm for a partial
fix for this situation. Other users are installing Agent Ransack,
www.agentransack.com to get around some of Search's limitations.

Nathan-
You are encountering a well known bug. The fix is a vbs script named:
xp_fix_search_error.vbs
Find it at:

Actually, I'm not MS Support, Steve. Just a volunteer here, like most of
the other folks :)
