is it possible to use xp home as the front end client for
a network with back end Windows 2003 Server, which will
have the usual network authentication?

cheers

Yes and no.
If you require real Windows domain authentication at logon and the running
of logon scripts and the application of group policy then you need to
upgrade to Windows XP Professional as Windows XP Home Edition cannot join a
domain and will not perform domain authentication at logon.
You can still access resources secured by a Windows Domain but you will need
to supply a set of credentials when you make the initial access to that
resource for the first time.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply, really appreciated!!

The situation I have is as followed:

I have a client who has already purchased 20 copies of
Windows XP Home edition for 20 machines, now he wants to
purchase a Windows 2003 Server to manage user
authentications and mapping to personal folders at the
server.

If you say it is possible to access secure resource using
Windows XP home, what are the credentials you are
referring to? I know it is more appropriate to upgrade
them to XP Pro, but I really appreciate if you can tell me
what is the maximum they can get from XP Home in this case.

Thanks a million!

Johnny

If your client deploys a Windows Server then if they wish to attach to a
shared folder they will either have to use the net use command and add the
/U:Domainname\Username option and then type in the password or if they use
explorer they will have to click the box for "connect as other user"
Either way they will first logon to their local PC and then be required to
provide the Domain credentials for the resources they attach to.
So they are not actually logging in with their Domain credentials.
This is not a good implementation. The overall experience and lack of
proper authentication, login/logoff scripts and Group Policy make this at
best a kludge solution. You need Windows XP Professional.
Will the supplier of the 20 PCs not offer an upgrade or swap out to Windows
XP Professional
