View Full Version : Leaking IP

My firewall blocks most things coming in to my computer,
including recently 2 Newtear attacks, however, I
regularly receive pop-ups from messageblocker.com and a
couple of others who say my IP is leaking out to the net.
How can I stop this? Can anyone advise me?

Most likely advertisements. Don't be fooled.

The fact that pop-ups get through your firewall may mean that it is not
configured properly to block unsolicited inbound connections.
You can ignore any ad that proclaims that "your IP address is being
broadcast on the Internet". This is just a fallacy they're trying to
exploit.
Any time you connect to a web server, it does have to get your IP address in
order to know where to send the requested data back (with the exception of a
router setup where only the router IP address is provided). Only that much
is true. It is not true, however, that your IP address gets sent to servers
that you (or software you're running) didn't explicitly initiate a
connection to in the first place.

Thank you

One correction to what I said about your firewall below: You need only be
concerned if these are the gray pop-ups generated by the Messenger service.
If they are web-browers pop-ups (as I've typically seen them), your firewall
is fine.
