pop-up messages

I use a cable modem to connect to the internet via
Adelphia Cable; I use Windows XP running on a Toshiba
Satellite laptop.
I have a terrible problem with pop-up messages- many of
them and they are very rude: they don't go away when I
click on my previously active window.

Any suggestions?
