Can't access safe mode

Hi my girlfriend has a compaq presario 2500 notebook and
she has forgotten her password, she has tried to get into
the safe mode but when she presses f8 after rebooting
nothing happens and it loads as normal is there any other
way of getting into safe mode or is she doing something wrong?

Tim;
She may not be pressing F8 at the correct time, there is about a 2
second window it needs to be pressed.
Reboot, immediately start tapping F8 once a second.
This helps to ensure it is pressed at the correct time, unnecessary
keystrokes will be ignored.
