Nicholas,

The script you recommended won't solve this issue.

From MVP Kelly: Close Help and Support. Next, click Start, Run and enter
HELPCTR -REGSERVER and click Ok.

Doug, I used HELPCTR -REGSERVER , but all that does for
me is open H&S center . Everything in H&S seems to work
fine - except - I have no INDEX and the RELATED TOPICS is
non- functional . Thank you for staying with me on this .

Have you tried checking your system files via
RUN
cmd
sfc \scannow

Doug Knox MS-MVP
December 5th 03, 12:09 PM
Jeff,

The command should make the "busy" hourglass appear, and then go away, as if
Help and Support were trying to start. At least that's the way it behaves
here.

Doug,
I get the " busy hourglass " just momentarily ,then H&S
comes up instantly , no problem there ,just won't show
anything when I click on -index - tab at top of the
page . A window comes up that is blank - red X at the
top left . That give you any leads ?

No, Jeff it doesn't. When I run the command, it shows the hour glass, but
H&S does not load.

You may want to check out http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm, Why
doesn't Help and Support work? for more troubleshooting tips.

Sorry, Jeff. I've never heard of the index being lost before, and it
seemed worth a shot. Can't say that I've ever found the sfc\scannow
process to go on for all that long, though, but then I never timed it.

Kelly doesn't mention this problem specifically, but she has a fair
amount on Help and Support in her A-Z area (H) - I'd recommend saving
the page since it's likely to keep you going for a while.. She
mentions ToniArt's Easy Cleaner, which has caused damage if the
correct version wasn't used. Also gives directions for reinstalling
H&S via its .inf file. I believe you've already tried RUN
hlpcenter -regserver

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

PS not connected with your problem: I'm sure you've noticed that the
majority of newsgroup traffic right now deals with a new worm which
seems to be cutting quite a swath. It's worth reading some posts from
MVPs for prevention and possible cure. Also, just in general you
should have a registry backup outside of Restore. Frequently
recommended here is erunt.zip, a 575K freeware utility.

Maureen, Thank you for the GOLDMINE of info! I have
recently used EASY CLEANER and believe that is the root
of the problem. I went to Kelly's and have tried the
restore .inf H&S , but this didn't work !
About sfc ; it took so long be cause I had to
continuiosly [sp? ]enter -Retry - button , to gather the
info from my M$ disc. Can you tell I'm new to XP ? Wasn't
like that in 98se.
Now I will go to the site you mentioned for the registry
backup. Also thank you for the heads-up about the worm !

Thanks again

My Windows install files are on my HD, which I guess explains the
difference with sfc\scannow. No CD input required.

The EasyCleaner Beta works fine for XP, it's the earlier version that
has created problems. Again, though, I've never heard of the index
being lost. Usually people just can't access Help and Support.

It's Lovsan. Be sure you have this critical update (you can look at
your Control Panel \ Add-Remove area to see if Windows Hotfix 823980
is already in the list):
Microsoft Windows XP Home :
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1:
Microsoft Patch WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe

Maureen, Yes ,I have the hotfix you mentioned, thank you .
I am thinking the only way to get back my H&S index is to
reinstall windows ,which I really don't want to do . Do
you think having that index and related topics is worth
the trouble ? I value your opinion on matter . Thank
you.

I don't find the index in XP as useful as it has been with earlier
versions since there is no option to search by word. (That is, other
than the words in their index.) Often I can find more useful
information via a google search. However, I've never had the situation
where it had to be an online search or nothing - usually I swear at
the index first for being inadequate. I tend to find the most valuable
XP information either at Kelly's website, via the newsgroups, or
through google... out of habit H&S still remains my first port of
call.

You might want to consider a repair reinstall. I haven't yet done one,
but they're supposed to leave all your programs intact. If you feel
that you're getting by, though, I'm not sure that there is an
advantage to having the index.

You might want to give it a week or so to allow the current worm
crisis to abate, then repost your question with Kelly's name in the
subject header. She's one of the most knowledgeable people here. Right
now the real experts are all typing madly to keep up with the flood of
posts of "hey my computer keeps shutting down".

(You did put up the XP firewall, right?)
