I am very satisfied with Office 97. I only use three parts - Excel, Word,
Office Tools.
When I tried to install this into XP, the installation program kept stalling
about 1/2 way through on certain files. It would freeze at about 50%. Is
Office 97 compatible with XP?

I kept waiting forever for something to happen. Nothing. I know in Win98
when this happens, I just Control-Alt-Del and end task. This doesn't seem
to work in XP. It freezes so bad here that even the shut off button will
not work. I have to shut down the main power to the computer at the rear of
the case. So, what replaces Control-Alt-Del in XP?

Office 97 should be compatible with windows xp, however office xp is the
recomended option.

Ctrl+alt+del in windows xp can do 1 of 2 things.
1) it will clear the screen and display a dialog box asking if you want to
change your password, open the task manager, return to the desktop, shutdown
the computer or lock it. This is common on networks.
2) standard computers, it usually just opens the task manager program. From
the task manager you can click end task.

Windows XP is by far more stable however like windows 98, it can still
freeze and ctrl+alt+del may not be working.

Try this.
Copy the entire office cd to your hard drive and run the program
compatibility wizard. Set the office 97 setup program to work in windows 98
compatibility. It may stop the setup from crashing the pc.
