saving as bitmap

When I try to save a picture - it saves as a bitmap image (untitled) when
the picture (under properties) is clearly a JPEG. Also the file sizes are
HUGE as a result. Why can't I save as a jpeg? Is there a setting that needs
to be changed? It was fine a week ago - HMMM
