What do you mean "the prog and the recent - but no file" ?
How are you pinning Excel to the Taskbar ?

Excel pinned by right clicking and then "pin to TB"
That works fine and stays together with recent files. But when I drag, say,
my file called ***** to the TB it stays for a while but after a day or so
that file is no longer pinned. Same thing with MS Publisher.

I can only pin exe files to the Taskbar. What exactly is your ***** file ?
If it isn't an application exe file then whatever program that opens it will
be pinned.
For example, if I drag a text note to the Tasbar then Notepad will be pinned.
If I drag a pdf document to the Taskbar then Adobe Reader will be pinned.

Isn't that how yours works?

Yes, but the actual document remains pinned, but only for a while. For
instance, yesterday pinned a file .xls to Excel and it is still there today.
But it will disappear sometime soon. I'll let you know when.
Thanks for trying to help.

It's because you're watching it. Turn your back and it will fail!
