Core font size in windows7

By *Core font size* I mean, for example the font size you get when you go to
Desktop > Properties
Look at the tabs and the text underneath.

I am partially sighted and have _always_ had a problem for me, here and in
many other situations

Is this baasic font customisable (at last) in Windows7

No good...
This has too many unwanted side effects on windows that haven't allowed
sufficient height to accommodate increased DPI :-(((

Is this something _new_ since XP Pro?

I want to _globally_ change that <deleted> awful font for something bigger
and more readable if I can...

You can find the old appearance settings Dialogue by selecting the windows
colour In the personalize screen then If you can see it Is a Thin, advanced
appearances setting Where you change fonts and size But beware if the font
is too big the strings of text that should fit in menus May no longer Fit.
There is a magnifier Under Accessories That can do the whole page or a
rectangular are about 300 pixels wide

OR you could change the display Resolution

The Win7 desktop is handled differently to the XP desktop.
This is the dialog box to change sizes:

I've tried different sizes and it seems to work ok.
As this is important to you I would try and see for
yourself, maybe you could checkout Win7 at a local
computer store before spending any money.

One other thing you can try - hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the
mouse wheel (zoom in or out feature). This will enlarge or shrink the
size of the text in most programs. So far the only one that it doesn't
work in for me is Thunderbird.

I suspect that this isjust a change DPI settigs in didguise...

Excellent advice.
I will do just that when I get the opportunity.

BTW, I deliberately made my request as specific as possible...

I am, I think, well aware of all the ways of changing font sizes as far as
XP Pro goes, and have done so to my satisfaction and have saved the theme.
I have two screen magnifiers installed.
The resolution is set to 1360 x 768 specifically for the 26 inch Samsung TV
I use as a monitor (as well as a TV)
Changing the DPI mucks some software up, like the scheduler for WinTV.

This is one problem that Microsoft will not, or can not sort.

That is, of course unless someone can tell me otherwise...

Microsoft introduced something called Desktop Window Manager
with Vista's Aero and it's a different way of displaying the
desktop, different from all previous versions of Windows.
I think once you see what can be done to enhance readability
you will like it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_Window_Manager

One effect is the ability to dim the desktop while displaying
a UAC message, something that malware would find impossible to
mimic (so they say - time will tell!).
