Bought mine for the same in Costco, so it might be a superstore price.

All I need now is to get a working serial number. :(((

I pre-ordered paid £63 at Amazon.co. uk.

You could find a friendly student, they get it a lot cheaper, around £30 :

And why wasn't a Product key (which I presume you mean by "serial number")
found inside the case?

It was, but seems to bear little relation to the stuff on the disk at
insertion time in the install process.

Time for *meaningful* conversations with MS tomorrow.

I don't seem to be alone by google comments.

If you didn't get a serial number you got cheated out of your money. What's
the point in owni ng an OS without a sign of ownership. Take it back.

And what do you mean by that?
If you open the plastic case, remove the little booklet on the left hand
side, the Product key should be on a yellow sticker attached to the back of
the front cover...

That's the front cover of the plastic case, not the front cover of the
booklet...

We bought our Pro and Home versions on pre-order, so cheap enough. Now we
need another copy I have coerced my oldest daughters flatmate into ordering
me one on his ac.uk address. Not like he needs/wants it anyway, he's got an
iMac :-) So £30 copy here we come - and thanks for the suggestion!
(Bit elitist that you have to be a uni student though - don't high school
students count?)

A friend of mine told me that the student version is crippled in XP.
Burning music on Media Player doesn't work.
I wonder if Win7 is like that too.

Windows 7 Student Upgrade is 100% functional, available as Home Premium &
Pro for the same price (hint: take the pro) &, of course, can be clean
installed. All you need is a functional e-mail address ending in *.edu.
There is no transcript checking, etc.

I heard that the student version is distributed as a download and as an .exe
not as an .iso. Are there any pros or cons to this?

For an additional $13 you can get an original Microsoft disk.
Originally, the download were "*box" files that "unloaded" into the
installation files that required burning. Many people had problems with
corrupted downloads, etc. & the resulting installation failures. The
distributer (Digital River?), changed it to a single "*.iso" image to burn
which takes complicated steps out of the download, unboxing & burning of the
original scheme. The "*iso" systems is leaner & better.
