It appears that WIN7 (32 bit) does not create restore points
automatically like XP did. The user has to create a restore point.

Is this true or am I missing something?

Mine has created at least one point every day since I installed it (Win7
32-bit). They've all been created by software installations or Windows
updates, though, so I don't know if it will automatically create a point if
nothing happens. No Windows updates today (yet!), so I'll see.

Related question--in XP I could manually create a restore point when doing something potentially dangerous or stupid. Can you do this in 7? When I go to System Restore, all I can to is restore to a
previous point. What am I missing?

Go to Control Panel/System and click on System Protection in the left pane.
Near the bottom right is a button labeled Create...
I found that Win7 creates points automatically whenever almost anything is
installed. When I was having problems with my ATI video driver, I installed
and uninstalled parts of it 6 times in one evening. I have 6 restore points
for those events, plus another for a Windows update.

I checked today, and there was not a point created yesterday. Nothing was
changed/updated, so I guess Win7 didn't feel it was necessary. Looking
through my points, not one of them is listed as a System Checkpoint like it
is in XP.

I type Create Restore Point in the Start Search box, that brings up System
Properties where you can create a restore point when needed.
