Checkboxes were around in Vista as well.

To clear all checkboxes except one, simply click on the name of
any file in the list. That selects that item, as it always has in
Windows. All other items will be deselected.

W7 tips and tricks...

In a windows explorer folder...

If you press the ALT key once and go to the Tool-> Folder Options -> View
-> Advanced Options list and click on "Use checkboxes to select items"
you don't have to control-click to gather up multiple items.

You can either apply it globally or locally among folders.

I'm not so sure about this method as there's no way to conveniently
cancel all the checkboxes, ESC didn't work. ???

I finally finished the "W7 Pocket Guide" .pdf yesterday and will keep it
around as a handy reminder. A nice, informative piece of work! Highly
recommended!

Andy, re ??? if you use checkboxes to select items you are right in saying
that ESC doesn't work, but to the left of the Name column heading there is a
check box which selects/deselects all which is fairly convenient - assuming
the top of the window is in view.

Wow! What a secret!
You really had to read a book to learn that?
Tools>Folder Options>View menu...
It's just there, same as a lot of other options.

So what's so great about that book?
Tell us the truth,
Are YOU the writer? ;-)

I am NOT. I don't have that kind of time or talent or priviledge.

;-) stands for *winking* smile.
Sorry if I didn't make it clear.

Congrats if you liked the book so much but,
have you ever tried to learn things by simply navigating through the menus?
It should be much easier than reading on paper!
