W7 laptop can't see XP machines in network and vice versa

Hi all,

We have a small LAN with a few XP Pro PC's. They all can see each other and
sharing files is a piece of cake. Now we have bought a new laptop with
Windows 7 Home Premium. We also connected an AP to the LAN. Setting up an
internet connection from the W7 laptop was easy. But somehow the laptop
can't see the other PC's and vice versa. Pinging works fine. I managed on
the laptop to give the network group the proper name. I also managed to
install LLTD on one of the XP machines. Now this machine shows up in the
laptops network overview but I can't do anything with that. In My
computer/network the LAN does not show up and neither do the other PC's. The
laptop is invisable from the other PC's as well.
I never expected this new Microsoft product would be so crap. How can I
arrange that the laptop can see the other PC's and vice versa?

All network setting seem right. I removed the laptop from the home group as
this only works with other W7 machines.

Well I don't know what you've done - my Windows 7 HP laptop saw the XP pro
network without doing anything!
Be aware that if you've set up a HOMEGROUP on the Win 7 machine as opposed
to using a Workgroup, only Windows 7 machines can use HOMEGROUPS.

I removed the W7 machine out of the homegroup. I gave the network name the
proper network name, same as the XP machines. I set up TCP/IP for DHCP.
It gets an IP address, internet works flawlessly. But the XP machines and
the W7 laptop seem to be blind for eachother. Of course network detection
and sharing etc are enabled.
I haven't got a clue why it won't work.

On the W7 machine did you set the workgroup? Ctl Panel / System and
Security / System / Computer Name

When you say you set up network settings, confirm that you did this in Ctl
Panel / Network and Internet / Network and Sharing Center / Advanced
sharing settings.

This should allow you to see other machines. For others to see the W7 box
you will need to have at least one folder/drive shared.

Yes. I gave the workgroup name the same as on the XP machines.

I have to translate this, as it concernes a Dutch version.
Ctrl Panel/Network centre/Advanced settings for sharing (the same as what
you meant),
Network detection: yes
File- and printersharing: yes
Share public folders: yes
Media streaming: yes
Encryption: 40/56 bits (tried 128 as well to no avail)
Sharing with a password: no
Connection with a homegroup: use user accounts and passwords

In the network centre I used a home network (not a homegroup) and a company
network. Did not make any difference
