Twice now, late at night, my previously 100% zero issue Windows 7 64 Home
Premium build has simply instantly dropped the display to a black screen
while the system still runs and the p/s, fans drive and power lights are on
and functioning. Zero memory dump, no errors or disk issues. Have to power
down . No new hardware, software, nothing. Any ideas?

recent case of an update causing bsod.
rogue program installed that failed to follow ms recommendations on proper programming techniques.

might try a restore back to before thgis started happening.
or try to find the recent updates and uninstall them.

ms has not yet issued a fix for the problem.

1. Bad video card.
2. Bad or out of date video card drivers.
3. Video card over heating.

True. I thought of those after I hit the send button, but based on
symptoms it seems that it has to be something directly related to the
video output.

Add 7. Video card not properly seated.

Humm. Maybe it's this, and there is a fix listed.

I am running Win 7 Home Premium 64 and have done some experimenting with
various video card driver settings and have discovered that my ATI 2600 PRO
512 MB will present momentarily a black screen shortly after boot-up if I
have use the ATI Overdrive at any setting other than the default. After the
black screen, which lasts a few seconds, the computer resumes normal
operation.

Using the default settings, there isn't a problem.

The symtoms described don't coincide with the "black screen of death"
symtoms which tend to be "soon after system startup". I side with the
hardware argument but think that reinstalling/resetting your USB hubs,
mouse, keyboard, check connections, updating the BIOS and/or making chages
in the BIOS in relation to USB and sleep states might fix the problem. A
temporary fix would be to disable sleep, power-down states and hybernation
as Dick mentioned. Your computer is probably in a state of sleep and if it
sees that it can disable some hardware--like your mouse, obviously your
monitor or, USB controllers, it will--unless you tell it not to.
