My defender software tells me that at somewhat random times rundll32.dll
attemps to "start/execute" random .exe or .dll files from anywhere on my
system. As far as I can tell I do NOT have a virus and the only odd thing
which seems to appear on the task list is "dllhost". Anyone have any idea
what this is about??

Nope. Doesn't seem to be anything to do with Java. I've tried shutting down
various services, but no joy so far. I still get messages from Comodo
Defense saying that rundll32 is attempting to run various files from time to
time.
