Running Windows XP Home Edition I was having problems
with the OS freezing. I decided to go to MS and do the
critical installations and the computer froze. I had to
do a hard re-boot, now the computer is stuck in a
continuous re-boot. Sony only offers a delete and re-
install recovery and since MS only distributes OEM
Windows XP with these laptops there is not an option to
re-install with out deleting.

Can you please confirm that if I buy a copy Windows XP
Home Edition That I will have the option to re-install,
keeping my current data (Applications and documents) in
tact?

Hi Matt,

First mistake was in trying to update a malfunctioning machine. Only do that
when you are certain one particular update will resolve your problem, and
then only install that one update.

If you do a repair install with a retail disk, it should (and I say
"should", not "definitely will") save your data and programs. It may also
cause you to lose some functionality as it may not contain needed drivers
for the laptop (which, incidentally, comes with a version of WinXP modified
by the manufacturer, not MS, MS only distributes retail versions). It's a
double edged sword.
