View Full Version : Abbreviated Newsgroup names and squirting files- grrrrrr!!!

valhealey

Hi Experts,

I have a new copy of Windows 7 Home Edition and I am using FireFox and
TBird also. I know how to remove the abbreviated names of the news
groups in Win2K but the version 7 seems vastly more complicated.
Anyone know how to do it?

Another thing that really annoys me is how files squirt up or down to
the margins of the screen. I'd kick that dumb idea off, if I knew how.

Has anyone the solutions?

TIA

I don't know what you're talking about. Windows 7 is an operating
system and has nothing to do with news group names.

If you're having a problem with your news reader, you should address
that.

I have no idea what you're referring to. What is this technical term,
"squirt?"

You'd be wiser asking Thunderbird questions in the
mozilla.support.thunderbird newsgroup on the news.mozilla.org
news server; but this may help:
http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/3211/Showing-full-newsgroup-names-in-Thunderbird

In Thunderbird on Windows, the Config Editor is under
Tools-Options-Advanced-General under the Advanced Configuration
section.

This is part of your news reader, not the OS (as Nil said). Read the
relevant manuals.

It sounds like you are dragging a window to the side or top of the
screen, whereupon Windows will position it against the relevant edge and
change the size "appropriately". BTW, your language confuses me too, so
I'm not sure if that's what you meant..

That is by design. You can make it stop by not dragging the windows to
the edges, or else by turning off Aero.

In fact, I find that behavior useful. I can drag two windows to the two
edges of the screen and then easily compare their contents. Then I drag
them off the edges to make them normal again.

It's called Aero Snap and it can be turned off by doing the following:

Open Control Panel and click on Ease of Access Center.

Click on the line that says "Make the mouse easier to use"

Now towards the bottom of the window look for the line that says
"Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the
edge of the screen" and click on the box next to it to turn off Aero Snap.

OK, now I understand. I don't like that behavior, either, but in
practice it doesn't interfere with anything. I guess I don't move
windows in ways that engage the feature.

Sorry, I don't know how to turn it off.

Thunderbird does have NNTP support. So is THAT what you really meant to
ask for help?

Where is no "Windows 2000" version of Thunderbird.

> but the version 7 seems vastly more complicated.

There is no version 7 of Thunderbird.

For a timeline of versions, see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Thunderbird#Timeline_of_releases

You'll notice versioning started at 0.1 and is now up to 3.0.11.
Neither 2000 or 7 were ever version numbers for Thunderbird.

> Anyone know how to do it?

Once you actually determine the version of Thunderbird, ask for help in
the Mozilla newsgroups that discuss Thunderbird. If your NSP
(newsgroups service provider) doesn't carry the mozilla.* newsgroups
then connect your newsreader to Mozilla's own NNTP server
(news.mozilla.org).

Figure out what version of Thunderbird that you have (probably under
Help -> About). Write up some DETAILS of what you are trying to explain
regarding expected and actual behavior or your problem. Ask the folks
in the Mozilla Thunderbird newsgroup for help on that particular
program. This newsgroup discusses Windows 7, an operating system.

> Another thing that really annoys me is how files squirt up or down to

Your description doesn't detail what is actually happening. Are you
trying to equivalence some behavior in Thunderbird to the ejection of
feces when you have the "hershey squirts"? Or perhaps are you asking
about the scrolling speed when clicking or dragging on a scrollbar or
when trying to select and highlight by dragging across multiple entries
in some tree list of newsgroups? Say what you are doing. Don't use
contrive some cutsy terminology that doesn't describe what is actually
happening.

See my reply to Lewis if you want to turn it off. As a side note it
turns off all AeroSnap features even the keyboard shortcuts that
accomplish the smae thing as dragging a window to any edge of your screen.

Just discovered another way to get to the same setting. Click on the
Start Orb and in the search box enter "arrange" (without the quotes).
On my system "Turn off automatic window arrangement" was the first
result which is where you'll find the setting to toggle AeroSnap on or off.

I assume you're talking about not having the newsgroup names abbreviated
in Thunderbird. Just enter about:config, the easiest way is with the
keyboard shortcut ALT-C, and in the filter box type in abbreviate. It
should now show the line "mail.server.default.abbreviate" (without the
quotes naturally). Just double click that line to change the setting to
false and close the about:config window.

That's AeroSnap in action, to turn that off click the Start Orb and in
the search box type arrange. Click on the line that says "Turn off
automatic window arrangement" and in the window that opens look for the
line that says:

"Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the
edge of the screen"

Just click on the box net to that line to place a check mark in there
and close the window.

You don't have to turn off Aero completely, you can turn off just the
AeroSnap feature as I've already outlined in other replies to this
thread. Also I find it useful especially when used with the keyboard
shortcuts.

WIN-up arrow: Maximizes current window
WIN-left arrow: snaps current window to fill the left half of the screen
WIN-right arrow: snaps current window to fill the right half of the screen
WIN-down arrow: if current window is maximized, restores to original
size. If window is original size, minimizes it to the taskbar.

Nice instructions but unfortunately you do NOT say when or where to
enter about:config OR use the keyboard shortcut ALT+C.

Where do I go first before I can do this? Do not always assume that we
are in the driving position to begin with.

You use the ALT-C shortcut at the main window, or a compose window. It
works just about everywhere except the address book. It doesn't matter
if you're viewing email or newsgroups either... about:config is a
window that will open when you use that shortcut.

An alternate way to get to the about:config window is Tools - Options -
Advanced click on the General tab then click on the box labeled Config
Editor.

Roy,

INTRO
I'll top post this if you don't mined so that others can see a step by
step guide to this procedure of enabling Thunderbird to display the full
names of NGs, rather than the default abbreviations which I also found
annoying.

Moreover it will also serve to remind me of the procedure in a language
that I understand by saving it as a text file under COMPUTING TB
Options. I am a bit thick when it comes to these matters, as you might
have guessed! ;-)

SUBJECT
Changing NG names displayed in Thunderbird from the default abbreviated
names using the " about:config " window

HOW TO ACCESS THE " about:config " window

Tools | Options | Advanced tab | Config Editor... |
(click the button in the pop up window promising that you will be careful)

when the " about:config " page shows up...
Scroll down the very long alphabetic list to...
" mail server. default.abbreviate "
and double-click it to change IT from "true" to "false"

Another way to access this configuration line is to key in " abbreviate
" (without the quotes) in the filter box in " about:config " which will
show up the option line " mail server.default.abbreivate" which you then
double click to change the option from false to true or vice versa.

And then get out as fast as you can! I am joking of course!

You have to close TB and reopen it for the configuration to take effect.

Roy, I hope you didn't mind my previous posting.

But tell me WHY does my ALT+C hotkey NOT work in Thunderbird for me when
other keys such as N for Next Unread Message and SHIFT+C (to mark all
unread messages as read) work? Or does this option depend on which
version of TB one is using?

Many thanks anyway, at last I have got rid of abbreviated NG names which
always annoyed me no end. I see that now very long NG names are
abbreviated to fit the pane (at least in a narrow pane) with an ellipsis
in the middle which is a superb idea.

Also when new messages downloaded why do some groups get displayed in
bold blue text while others are displayed in bold black text? Would you
know? This is a puzzle I have been trying to solve but with no luck so far.

TB is a lovely newsreader but I will only classify it as excellent IF
AND WHEN they also provide a "Responses to my Postings" option to
display ONLY messages that contain responses to my posts or indeed where
there might NOT have been any responses so I can go and shoot myself. ;-)

Not necessary to close and restart Thunderbird, you can just change your
folder view by clicking on the left or right pointing triangles. For
example you could just switch from the All Folders view to the Unified
Folders view and back and you would see the change.

That I'm not sure about. Possibilities could include that it's a
keyboard shortcut for another program or process you have running in the
background, or you're using a theme that doesn't support it, or you have
an installed add-on that disables it.

Bold means that there are new messages in that folder, and bold blue
means that there are new messages since the last time you visited that
folder during the current session.

One way you can work around this shortcoming is to set up a filter to
tag messages that are addressed to you. Then when you're reading
newsgroups you can use the Quick Filter bar and have it show only tagged
messages. If you need any help figuring out how to do this, just ask.

The one thing that I would like to see changed in Thunderbird is the
ability to handle cross-posted newsgroup messages properly. As it is
now you'll see every instance of a cross-posted message, but a proper
newsreader would mark the other instances of a message as read as soon
as one is read regardless of which newsgroup it was read in. For
example someone cross-posted a message in groups A, B and C. As it is
now with Thunderbird you would see each message in all three groups. A
proper newsreader would mark the copies of the cross-posted message in
groups A and C as read if you read the copy that was posted in group B.
I can live with this for now, but I wish that they would add it in a
future version of Thunderbird.

Oh crap, sorry I wasn't thinking straight haven't had enough coffee yet
to fully wake up. My previous suggestion won't work in newsgroups as
there is no To: field to base your filter on. So here's an alternate
method that you can use, just mark a thread as watched that you've
replied to or started yourself. Then when you want to see if you have
any replies, just change your view to show only watched threads. I know
it a cumbersome and awkward way of doing it, but that's the best I can
come up with...

Perfectly understandable.

Thanks. Yes it does work but is a bit of a roundabout way, as you say.
Let's hope that they will add this "Show Replies To My Messages"
"must" feature in later versions.
