Win 7 & Paragon

Just installed Paragon HD Manager 2010 LE on my Win7 machine and thought
I'd just christen it by letting it do a defrag on my C drive.

A mistake if ever there was one!

It froze on the job like a beer lout and took down up at least 2 files
-- one being the sqmapi.dll which Win7 wouldn't let me either replace OR
delete whether I signed in as a user OR as the administrator proper
UNTIL that is, I managed to go through the whole rigmarole of "taking
ownership" of the file -- quite a feat considered against the simple
RClickt>Delete. A safety precaution no doubt by M$ but somewhat akin to
keeping loose change in a built in safe!

And not only that, when I later went to make spare a copy of a
particular DVD as a precaution against any damage to the original I
found out that Roxio had stopped working too.

Thanks for the warning. I'll let Win 7 do it's own defragging.

I've just instaled it too, but only so that I could create the bootable CD
from it and use this for hard drive partitioning, formatting etc.
That seems to work OK. I've used the earlier version of this for several
years.

Reinstalling Roxio didn't help either. Paragon obviously had messed up
my Win7 installation, I surmized and I was right.

THE BEAUTY OF WIN-7
Dragged and dropped all my user files to an external hard disk in
preparation BUT when I inserted my Win7 OEM disk and had prepared myself
for a full reinstall of both Win7 and other programs and all that this
entailed I soon realized that M$ were offering me a full repair with the
latest Win7 via my Broadband connection.

I thought what have I got to lose even if it WAS going to take a few
hours, as I had been warned?

So I gave it a try and lo and behold within a couple of hours or so I
had a brand new Win7 installation with all the latest bells and whistles
and even iTunes, which according to a warning might not have worked
properly after the re-install of Win7, is working perfectly.

AND my Roxio is also loading properly now instead of doing a
disappearing act during the loading!

So I say, well done M$!

I certainly do not begrudge having to pay them for such a lovely OS
which I must admit I didn't quite appreciate at first. But the more I am
finding my way around it the more I like it.

Can you imagine a completely fresh re-install of the Operating System
with your other software AND user files remaining intact.

Yes intact more or less except that my Kaspersky needed re-activation.
Apparently the activation had got lost in the process but that was easy
to sort out.

Give the devil his due, as they say.

I'd try the free version of Macrium Reflect instead of Paragon, if I
were you, though I can't tell you offhand whether it will also defrag. I
downloaded and installed on my old XP machine and created both Bart PE
AND Linux Recovery CDs with it.

Simple and does the job including backups. There is also a more
sophisticated version that you can buy if you want to.

Keep it simple, is my motto. I created a simple xcopy command to
incrementally copy my user files onto an external 2 1/2" hard disk.
Because these laptop type drives do not need external power either. Just
plug it into a USB port, bring up the C:\ command prompt, paste the
xcopy command at the C:\ command prompt and off you go. Does the job
perfectly and with the minimum of fuss.

Initially I would just drag and drop my user files but do not forget to
select all and remove their A (Archive) attributes or the xcopy command
will try to copy them again. If you configure the xcopy command properly
and not copy files without A attributes, it will copy the new and
updated files only AND also remove their A attributes. Just study the
xcopy switches and decide which parameters would best work out for you.

You can still back-up or create an image of your C:\ drive (and your
other drives if you want to) by using the appropriate software.
