A strange problem here. I downloaded W7 SP1 and installed it but in
Control Panel/Windows Updates it's listed as failed. I think I turned
off the CP at a bad time. A few days later I received in the mail, the
SP1 update CD (which I had ordered much earlier) so I installed it. Now
I have 2 SP1's installed, one of which is listed as a failed
installation. The other shows up in My Computer on a rt click so it
must be OK. So how do I remove the failed installation? TIA for any
help on this one.

Don't worry about it. This is normal MS behavior. The failed SP1 has
been replaced by a good one. The same thing happened to me with .NET.

It's just a log entry, and AFAICT, there's no way to remove it. No real
need either - as a log entry, it's harmless, even if ugly :-)

A failed install, should back itself out.

"The more common (and still rare) outcome is an SP1 installation that fails
to complete, leaving the system unchanged and still usable."
