Shutting down

[apuzzler]

So far my biggest complaint is the shut down process. If I am working from
the "desktop" it takes three steps to get to the power off button. Is there
any way to put it into one of the tiles or onto the task bar? From the
desktop it seems to take a couple of tries to get the "Charms" bar to come
up. If I'm in a hurry it is especially annoying. (Where in the heck did
they come up with that name?)

I'm glad I only put this mess on one computer. It will be a long time and
many improvements before I will even think about putting it on my other
computers. Actually, I am very happy with Windows 7--I am just a sucker for
anything new that comes along--I had to give Windows 8 a try. I'm not ready
to take it off the one computer, I will give it more time to see if I can
get my brain wrapped around the way this OS works.

[Steve]

1. Navigate to the desktop.
2. Right click on the desktop and select New Shortcut (A shortcut menu
appears)
3. Enter shutdown /s /t 0 (that’s a zero) in the location box and hit Next.
4. Enter the name Shutdown in the box and click Finish.
5. Right click on the Shortcut icon on the desktop and select Properties.
6. Click Change Icon under the Shortcut tab then Click Ok in warning box
that says shutdown.exe contains no icons.
7. Select an Icon from the list of available images. Click Ok twice (once
to close the Change Icon window and once to close Properties window). Your
shortcut will now have an icon.
8. Right click the shortcut and select Pin to Start. The shutdown icon will
now appear on your Start screen.
9. Drag the shutdown icon to a prominent place on your Start screen. I
recommend putting it in the first column to the left so you will always see
it.
10. Right click the icon and select Pin to Taskbar if you want the shortcut
to live on your desktop’s taskbar as well.

Repeat the previous steps to create a Restart button. Use the command
shutdown /r /t 0 in the location field.

Install the Classic Shell program - that gives you back all the shutdown
buttons and original menus. It will also skip straight past all that
Metro nonsense when you start up. That, or a similar program, is the
only way I could get Windows 8 to be usable.

On Windows 8, it performs an account logoff and shutdown.

Fyi..
Alt F4 which provides the option Shutdown, Restart, Logoff etc...continues to work from the desktop UI

Normally (in prior versions) the power button enters the proper shutdown
sequence, or at least can be configured to do so.

Two things I should have said:

1. My pronouncement above needs an "IIRC".

2. The hardware reset button is *not* so kind...It causes an instant
restart without giving Windows a chance to catch the signal.

3. (I can't count!) The power switch on the back of the computer also is
a hard switch that shuts down the power supply.

Apparently I do recall correctly.

I pressed the power button and my computer went through the normal
Windows shutdown procedure (Win 7).

I also Googled 'shutdown button Windows 7' and found this advice from
Microsoft:

The article is careful to distinguish between the hardware button on the
computer case and the software button on the Start Menu.

You can put a shortcut here so it's a tile:
C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Sta rt Menu

I use ccleaner and use the shortcut "C:\Program
Files\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe" /AUTO /SHUTDOWN and it cleans and turns
off the PC. You can designate cookies to save in options.

There is a hidden default folder, I believe its what you're looking for.
Explorer, view tab, far right "hidden" tick box.

When you're on the desktop, press Alt-F4. That brings up a shut down
dialog. For my 2 cents worth, i don't think you really don't wanna have
a single-step shutdown that doesn't give you a chance to change your
mind if you accidentally invoke it.
