Win 8 Pro activates automatically as it installs, I don't what happens
if you are not on the internet.

That depends - - -
1. appropriate Key entered when prompted, and the computer is connected
to the internet. The internet connection is then used to complete the
process, and obtain any needed updates, etc.
2. Appropriate key entered on stand alone computer. It may (depending on
market area and version of win 8) require that you call Microsoft for a
further "key" and instructions.
3. Some preinstalled (OEM) versions will behave much as win7.

There is a confusion factor, since the terms verification/validation may
be used. When you complete the process, the usual reply is ----
"Activated" ----

OEM's have the ability to somewhat change the process if they choose.
Some corporate or government versions may use the companies servers to
complete the process.

to verify that the key is valid and then activates the OS. "If the licensed computer is connected to the Internet, the software

New PCs come with Windows pre-activated at the factory, so the product key/activation steps are only seen by users who upgrade to
Windows 8 from an older edition, or those who use the upcoming "System Builder" to install Windows 8 on a new, custom-built

Windows 8 Enterprise, the version aimed at companies with volume license agreements, uses an entirely different mechanism for
activation. Rather than ask the user for a key, Windows 8 Enterprise -- like its enterprise-grade forerunner, Windows 7
Enterprise -- ships with what's known as a KMS (Key Management Service) client key that's activated by an on-premises machine.

Another way to activate Enterprise -- and the method used by copies downloaded from the MSDN and TechNet subscription services --
is with MAK (Multiple Activation Key), which connects with Microsoft's own activation servers.

If you just installed Windows 8, it allows you to use it. As the first
Windows 8 install of mine had no sound as Windows 8 said there was no
speakers connected. So I dumped that install and used another Gateway
M465 laptop with a newer BIOS version that allows Windows to see the
speakers are indeed connected.

I only installed this second copy as a test, so I wasn't planning on
keeping it. Thus I didn't want to activate it either. I also turned WiFi
off, so it wouldn't do so automatically. And I could use Windows 8
without a problem. Well last night I put it into sleep mode until the
morning. After I woke it up and entered my password, it won't let me do
anything except to activate it. You can do this by Internet or by the phone.

That's one of the less-documented changes between Win7 and Win8. The
"Genuine Windows" crew at Microsoft removed the limitation being able to
rearm an installation only three times (it's now unlimited) but the flip
side of that change was that until a Win8 installation is activated there
are (unspecified) restrictions on what, and for how long, one can do with
the system.

I don't know if that draconian behavior will return if an activated system
loses its activated status. A few years ago I was in a meeting at a
Microsoft office that was attended by an individual from a certain gov'mt
organization that had $BIGNUM Vista systems; the statement was made that the
behavior of Vista (this is the RTM release, pre-SP1) when not activated had
been formally characterized by the organization as a "Denial of Service
attack."

How can you check that Win8 is activated?

This is how you do it in Win7: Start => right-click Computer, and choose
Properties. At the bottom of the window that comes up, you should see this
heading: Windows Activation. It will say: "Windows is activated" and provide
the Product ID or provide the number of days remaining of a trial period.

Is the process the same in Win8? - I haven't instaled Win8 yet, but intend
to and want to knowand couldn't find out on the web.

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System (just paste the left into
Explorer and it should pop right up)

or just press Win+Pause Break key. The bottom will tell you if it is
activated or not. And if you press on "View details in Windows
Activation", it will tell you the day it was activated on. You can add
features here too.
