The forums are full of app store "you are not connected to the internet
" failures. And not a single sensible reply from MS.

I've gone back to 7 until they sort that particular glitch (plus lack of
drivers for Epson) out...

There is a troubleshooter here you could play with/

http://www.ghacks.net/2012/07/04/windows-8-troubleshoot-microsoft-accounts-issues/

"Microsoft accounts troubleshooter"

http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/2/4/F24D0C03-4181-4E5B-A23B-5C3A6B5974E3/microsoftaccounts.diagcab

The "You are not connected to the internet" test is near the bottom.

Thanks for the links Paul. Helpfully, the diagnostic tool announces
"Problem with Microsoft account policy not fixed". And it also says
"some settings have sync turned off", but the sync wizard tells me there
are no partnerships on this computer.
Whatever that means....

I should say - I can log into my MS account perfectly well; but I'm
running this pc under a local account at the moment. I initially
switched from the MS account login to try and solve the apps not working
problem.

One thread I was looking at, a user mentioned "doing a refresh", but
I don't know what that means. It didn't sound like he reinstalled
the OS, but did some other operation to correct settings.

There is a reference here to "Refresh Your PC". If I was doing this,
I'd use some means to back up first (restore point, external backup
or whatever), at least until I was happy with the extent and
nature of the changes it makes.

I've tried out the refresh option and it removes all third party software you have installed.
It only keeps those apps that have been downloaded from Microsoft's store, all other installed
software will be removed.

Yes, my experience is identical. Bloody nuisance having to reinstall
everything...especially when it doesn't cure the store app problem.
Thank Sense I kept 7 on a separate hard drive...windows 8 is not without
its hassles.
