View Full Version : Norton Anti Virus?

November 18th 12, 01:36 PM
I'm trying to make a decision as to whether to keep or remove Symantec
Corporation Product Version 20.2.0,9 Anti Virus software that came
installed on my new Hewlett Packard computer. I've had some problems
with it but these may be the result of this trial version being less
than a full version.

I can't send the registration information for my Quicken accounting
software on this computer because Norton calls it an intrusion of some
kind.

Opinions and recommendations, please. Thanks, Gordon

You were advised you to get rid of Norton in the Windows 7 newsgroup and my advice
is the same with Windows 8, get rid of Norton. You already have Microsoft's antivirus, Defender,
installed as part of Windows 8. You don't need to spend any more money on antivirus software.

You are infected with a serious virus that will rob you of speed,
memory, and functionality. It is called "Norton Antivirus." I suggest
you rid your computer of this disease immediately.

Well, you asked for opinions.

I got the same Symantec product with a HP system. IMO the stuff causes
problems so I removed it.

Windows Security Essentials. If you use it, turn off Windows
Defender. It's a memory hog.

Dave, I'm not sure MS antivirus of any kind was installed by the
manufacturer on this new computer. I have not installed any antivirus
software but Norton Trial Version came with the new computer.

I'll check again and see if Windows Security Essentials or anything
similar is installed. Gordon

Okay, I'll work toward getting rid of Norton and replacing it with
Windows Security Essentials. Can I remove Norton by means of the
"Remove Software" function in Control Panel or should I use some other
means for cleaning up the Norton mess? Gordon

No, add/delete programs does not clear Norton completely from your
system; that's yet another objection to it. Somewhere on
Norton/Symantic site there's a program that removes everything
Norton-ish from the system. It may be the one given upthread a little.

I used the uninstall software supplied by Symantec. It was a while
ago. I think the HP software was a problem as well but I can't
remember why.

Microsoft Security Essentials is for Windows 7 and below, not for Windows 8.
Windows Defender is the Microsoft antivirus and antimalware program for Windows 8.
As I have said, Windows Defender is already on your computer - it is part of Windows 8.
All you need to do is get rid of Norton, and don't install any other antivirus software.

Microsoft security Essentials is not supported on Windows 8.
Look at the Key Features - "Supports Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP"

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/security-essentials-download

Windows Defender is the Microsoft antivirus that is part of Windows 8.
Windows Defender is not the same as the previous Defender, which was
just an antimalware program.

Dave, I've tried downloading, saving to my desktop, then running this
removal tool but it won't start, for some reason. It goes through the
start process to the point of aking if I want to allow this probram to
run. When I select Yes, it blinks and dissappears. Are you sure it can
run on a Windows 8 60 bit computer? Gordon

Have you tried the "Programs and features" control panel?

Also...your posting did not say if the computer was delivered from HP with
Windows 8 installed, or with Windows 7 and you've installed Windows 8 as an
upgrade. Especially if the latter is the case, there's a good chance that
the version of Norton Antivirus (irrespective of its reputation) isn't
compatible with Windows 8. I have no experience with the Norton-branded
products (so I don't know when or if a Win8-compatible version of NAV
is/will be available), but the Windows 8-compatible production build of the
enterprise AV package (under the Symantec brand) was just released a couple
of days ago, fixing problems that made the earlier builds unusable on Win8.

Typically, to uninstall Norton you have to download an uninstaller from
the Symantec site.

The uninstaller software is:

1. Not necessarily easy to find, and

2. Specific to the version both of Norton software and of Windows that
you are running, so you have to locate the correct one.

I haven't done this for a while, so I have no current or more detailed
info to give you.

It was my understanding that the manufacturer, Hewlet Packard,
installed Windiows 8 at the time the computer components were being
assembled. Gordon

I finally got my computer restored to an earlier restore point and it
is working very well, again, but it still has Norton installed and I
can't find a workable means for getting it out of the way, totally.
The Norton removal link that was posted earlier in this thread seemed
to work but there were bits and pieces of Norton that showed up on my
computer, after the removal process had been completed. There was a
Norton Start Button in the Task Bar, but it didn't work. There were
Norton lines in some of the other program windows, too.

I did a restore point and everything is working well for the time
being but I still want to remove Norton completely and safely.

Yes, removing norton/symantic products completely has been a headache
for years. One thing you could try is the Revo uninstaller program.
There is a free version, but I don't know how deep the scans work; I've
got the Pro version.

You can point it to 'norton' and it will display (after some time) every
registry key and file that is associated.

Run the Norton removal program again and then run CCleaner
(http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard) and use the
Registry Fixer but nuke ONLY the references to Norton and/or Symantec.

The icon on the task bar was probably not put there by Norton and hence
was unknown to the uninstaller. That kind of thing happens to me a lot
for exactly analogous reasons.

Just remove it from the task bar.

I can't speak to what else you saw, since you didn't mention what they
might have been - but anyway, I probably don't know enough to say
anything valid about them :-)

It was a typo! I got my tongue over my eye teeth and couldn't see what
I was saying. ;-)

My new HP Pavilion computer came with Windows 8 and a trial version of
Norton Internet Security installed by the manufacturer.

The computer was still in its original box and the seal had not been
broken or tampered with. I bought this computer from the local Staples
Store and they ordered if from HP for me. THat is, it was never on
display or in any way modified by the people at Staples.

This trial version of Norton Internet Security is good for 60 days
from the time I first used the computer and it sent an on-line
activation response back to Norton. That was last week, so I have
about 53 days left. I think I'll just hang on and bite my fingernails
while hoping for the best. I'm guessing Norton Internet Security will
uninstall itself if I don't ante up and buy an extension.

I think my use of the term "task bar" was an error. I was talking
abouit the small section at the right end of the task bar...what ever
it's called???? Anyway, it has a Norton appearance and seems to have
been supplied by the Norton Internet Security when it was first set up
by HP as they put this computer together.

I'm going to just sit tight and let this Norton Internet Security
software trial version expire.Surely there will be some means for
getting it all cleaned off my computer when the trial version expires
and I don't renew or switch to another version. Or, would Norton leave
me a captive to their marketing strategy until I take this computer to
the land fill and dump it?

Almost every computer based function such as Files Explorer, Control
Panel, Libraries, etc., showed a Norton warning line at the top in
bright yellow/orange indicating that the computer was without any
virus or malware protection. Gordon

OK, It used to be called the "System Tray", and now it's officially the
"Notification Area". Not surprisingly, you'll still see both terms. And
that *was* put there by Norton, I'm reasonably sure.

Also, getting rid of that belongs to my areas of non-expertise, sorry
:-)

I'm beginning to be afraid of that :-(

(Understatement alert!) OK, that is definitely annoying. I wonder if my
previous remarks about finding a different (more tailored) version of
the Norton remover might be valid...I do know that the download worked
for me way back when, but it was an earlier fully paid version of
Norton on an earlier version of Windows.

Installing Windows Defender might help with those messages, at least if
the Norton software is honest.

I'm happier than ever that I gave up on that product a few years ago,
but that's no consolation to you.

Or a different news service provider :-)

But just a moment ago, I did see Gordon's reply to my post...

I want to say "Nyah, nyah, nyah", but I'm too mature and too polite :-)

Personally, I wouldn't bet real money on that. I dunno what it will do,
but be glad it's not McAfee; you might have had him call round and shoot
you for not renewing.
