View Full Version : Re-Start hangup

Mellowed[_2_]

I have a Toshiba Laptop with 8G Ram. This computer originally came with
Win 7 and I did the $14.99 upgrade to Win 8. When doing a Re-start the
computer will hangup after the shutdown. I have to hit the power button
to shut it down, then hit it again to complete the restart.

In trying to solve the problem I have checked the BIOS (That seems to
have been replaced with something new) and can find no conflicts. I
just reloaded Win8 yesterday using the ISO disk I made with the update.
Same problem. (That gave me another problem. I'll start a different
thread)

Anybody have any ideas on where to look? I'm considering reloading Win7
and start totally over. But that is not very attractive.

Try powering up in the Safe mode and see if the problem is gone or if it
follows into the safe mode.

If powering off works properly in the safe mode and not in the regular
mode it's time to see what is being loaded in the regular mode that is
not in the safe mode, like anti-virus or other protection software.

Another test is to boot one of the Live Linux or other CD/USB bootable
operating systems and see if the problem is gone. If it still occurs
it's possible a hardware issue has turned up coincidentally with the OS
upgrade.

The Safe Mode idea seemed like a good idea. However, I can't find a
'Safe Mode'. The trusted F8 thing doesn't work. Just holding down the
power button doesn't work. i.e. I can't get this thing into Safe Mode!

Microsoft changed how you get into safe mode:

They are pretty good at that, aren't they?

Because they can?

Well I got into Safe Mode (thanks Zaphod) and it did solve the restart
hangup in Safe Mode. Went into MSCONFIG. There are no 'startup'
options. However, on the SERVICES tab there are tons of items checked.
One of these items is probably the problem. Wow, how do I Psyc that
out except one by one over a very long time.

Anybody know a Shortcut?

That is of course how Microsoft makes there money. Nothing really wrong
with win 7 but Microsoft employee's wanted something for themselves so
they came out with win8. Only logical answer as it is not logical for a
desktop business user in any way. Laptop users can get away with it but
not desktops (IMO) Of course now everybody has there own opinions and
will have something to say about this. Personally I do not see why they
could not have come out with some easy setting to make the desktop the
same as 7 if needed (without 3rd party stuff) The new way to get to safe
mode is kind of dumb. No more nice blue screens with a error message,
now you get a nice clean black screen! no message or anything just
black. How is one supposed to know what to look for if there is nothing
there? Before you could simply google a error message and fix it.I just
removed 8 from one computer and reloaded 7 because a 4yr old computer
would not run win8 although the system was designed for touch! That is
just crazy in my opinion! Running win 7 pro 64 on this one and it scores
7.8 and I do not want to mess that up. I will look towards win 9 and
maybe by then there will be something better.

I would have replied earlier, but I was fighting my own Windows 8
shutdown problems with one of my Windows 8 machines. That machine also
came with Windows 7 and everything works and it is a Dell Latitude ST
(slate tablet). That one I too did the $14.99 upgrade. Everything was
working, except the two cameras.

Then I updated and all hell broke loose. Did your problem start before
updates or after? And what trips mine is either going to Standby or
Hibernation. It may or may not work. Although later shutdown won't work
(you get the blue screen saying shutdown stuck forever) and the WiFi
driver becomes missing. Which I have to uninstall and reinstall to get
working again.

My fix so far is not to use Standby or Hibernation. Which is a terrible
idea for a tablet. Thank goodness I buy machines in pairs and the other
one still has Windows 7 and that works fine. In your case besides the
help you got so far, I would check the event logs.

I can't say that I noticed before the upgrade. So the problems must
have occurred after the upgrade.

Your problems are more severe than mine. But I don't use Standby or
Hibernation, so maybe I might have the problem there. I just don't know.

Since the re-start worked from Safe Mode I will probably try cutting out
one by one the Services items in MSCONFIG. I'm not looking forward to
that so I'm procrastinating in case an 'Eureka' moment is posted. I am
operation as it is. But I just shouldn't have the problem.

I had this problem after some updates - for some reason thought it was
taking too long to bootup so I did a start button shut down.

Eventually left it to run its course in either a repair or completing
updates. When it did finally complete the boot all has been OK since.

One suggestion is to use the freeware CCleaner program to temporarily
disable the stuff in the startup section. It is found in the Tools,
Startup tab.

For the first run I'd disable everything there and see if the power down
works properly, then turn on a couple at a time until you find out what
is causing the problem, provided this is an actual startup type problem.

I find using CCleaner easier to use rather than MSCONFIG for this but
then again I also use the CCleaner program to clear out the temporary
stuff that builds up over time.

CCleaner can be found at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Did you also peek into the "Windows reliability history"? You can find
it either by searching in Settings and searching for reliability or in
the Control Panel -> System and Security -> Action Center. Here it lists
the problems and sometimes the solution to the problem.

I don't see why business users can't use Windows 8 or find it useful. You
can customize the desktop and arrange things any way you want, as I
understand it. I fiddled around with it in the store a little and all the
programs are still there; you just access them slightly differently. And
if the programs launch and still work the way they should, what's the
difference? If I can still do some word-processing, use a web browser,
read my e-mail, run an image editor, edit audio and videos, build web
pages, do some video captures, play some games, etc.... then to me, it's
just as good as any older version of Windows.

Yes, I don't like blue screens, but I would like black screens even less,
especially since sometimes, on this temporary build, my screen goes black,
anyway, and the computer keeps running, though in a frozen state
(caps-lock won't light up my keyboard's LED). Sometimes it goes black for
a second and then everything comes back and everything is frozen, even the
mouse pointer.

Thanks for the suggestion, but Startup only has a few items like the
intellipoint for the mouse, etc. I think the problem is in the Services
section. I've tried a few things without success. I'll probably just
live with the aggravation.

Sorry, no - though I have been to Silver Spring MD, and likely as not
signed on to that BBS, that must have been a different two-headed alien
megalomaniac.

No apology necessary, and Happy New Year to you as well!

That is what you get for picking such a pedestrian name. You
need something unique.

Happy New Year.

Interestingly, I only (relatively) recently adopted this handle, in
large part because my previous appellation (although much more unique)
implied certain things about me that were at best a stretch and at
worst a complete misrepresentation. I found this one to be a bit more
comfortable to wear, as it were.
