View Full Version : Sharing Konica Minolta printer from new Windows 8 machine to old Windows XP machine

Hello All,

I bought my wife in HP computer for Christmas with Windows 8 replacing
her old one running Windows XP.

I have the network hardwired, her computer and mine plus my Konica
Minolta magicolor 1690 MF. Using her old machine she was able to print
on my printer and her printer.

So far, I haven't been able to set everything up the same way with
Windows 8. I found K/M's software for Windows 8. But for some reason
her computer will see it (the printer) but so far I haven't been able
to do any printing on the 1690 MF from her computer. All it tells me
is there has been an error?

All help would be greatly appreciated

Are you using a "Workgroup" with your mixed computer setup ?
The same workgroup value gets used on both the computers,
and that is to help with the sharing thing. My workgroup value
is set to WORKGROUP (easy to remember).

Some more mumbling about printers here.

I just got through talking to tech support it Konica Minolta about
this problem and I was informed that they will have new drivers for
Windows 8 sometime in February which they claim Walsall this problem.

They also told me that all I should have to do is when Windows 8
recognizes the network printer (1690 MF) which it does all I have to
do is install the new drivers which will enable it to be accessed from
my wife's computer.

Anyway, thanks for your posts.

Thanks for the heads-up, but it looks like I have until February to
get this done or whenever Konica Minolta comes up with drivers for the
printer in question. I'm copying all this and printing it out so all
have it for later reference.

You can:

1) Make a backup. Or use a restore point. Or use a method you
know will allow you to undo the changes. As a computer user,
you should *always* be ready for a disaster of your own making.

2) Experiment with the files Minolta currently offers. (I found
a file which just does USB drivers. And the larger package which
would includes the "fluff" that seems inevitable with printers.
Like some 300MB download for an HP printer. Minolta has a ways
to go, to catch up to HP in terms of file size.)

I'm the impatient type, and I wouldn't be waiting until February :-)
That's like, admitting defeat :-)

Based on what I could see, by looking at the installer files with
7ZIP, I don't really expect what comes out in February is going
to be that much different (at the driver level). The drivers
were likely written for Vista, and just keep getting carried
forward.

Well, the way I'm set up on my computer is I have two hard drives and
every day at the same time (2 AM) I have a program called Casper
use to clone my entire CD drive and all its changes. And if I can
remember (at 78 is sometimes a problem ;-).) I will make a restore
point.

I have experimented with the K/M drivers on the Windows 8 machine to
no avail so rather than mess something up I guess I'll wait.

When I was younger I had a problem with inpatients and I had always
thought that I would never live this long. I guess being patient has
aided me in living longer, of course with a "don't get mad get even"
philosophy patience is a virtue. :-)

If my wife and I decide she needs a laser printer and for some reason
we can get this problem solved, it probably won't be a K/M machine.
(getting even) ;-)

Paul,

I just created a Workgroup on the Windows 8 machine and then in
control panel clicked on Devices and Printers like I had so many other
times and it made a copy (1) of the M/K printer like it had done a
jillion times. But this time it worked, of apparently because of the
workgroup creation. Apparently the Workgroup set up allows the Windows
8 machine to use the drivers for the XP machine?. Also the K/M fax
does not show up, only the printer itself which was all I really
wanted.

I thank you and everyone else who is posted on this thread. Maybe what
I found out will help someone else.

Albert
