Windows Defender running a scan at every startup.

I have been running windows 8 pro for the last couple of months. It is
fully updated, and has been running very well. All of a sudden at every
startup, when I go to the windows desktop, the disk activity is high,
keyboard and mouse response is very slow or non-existant. Starting task
manager shows antimalware scan using approx 30% of processor. How can I
stop this scan from running at every startup?

Reset the option you changed immediately before "all of a sudden."

Did you look at the options at all before posting?

What's the name of the antimalware exe file?

I have four Windows Defender tasks listed in Task scheduler:
Windows Defender Cache maintenance
Windows Defender Cleanup
Windows Defender Scheduled Scan
Windows Defender Verification

All of these use MpCmdRun.exe but there is no information
listed on what triggers them.

all I can see is in Task Manager that Antimalware service executable is
eating up most of the processor.
I have tried disabling Defender and disabling the scheduled task for the
scan, but the problem continues on every boot or reboot.

A little more followup information:

After a cold boot or a reboot, when switching to the desktop, no Icons
appear and the little spinning ring continuously spins. The mouse cursor
can be moved but mouse clicks appear to be unresponsive. Continuous
right clicking on the task bar will eventually give me the option of
opening the task manager. The "antimalware service executable" is using
the lions share of the processor.
Once I can start task manager, the icons appear and the system seen to
resume to normal.

I have tried disabling Windows Defender and disabling the scheduled task
for antimalware scanning, with no joy.

No, not a joke. And it probably is not your problem. But sometimes it's
easy to overlook the simple things.

My Windows Defender has been running ever since Win8 was installed the day
it became available (October 26). No other antimalware has been run on this
machine since then.

At the moment, Antimalware Service Executable is using 0% of my CPU (with an
occasional spike to 0.2% or so) and 78 MB of Memory. I don't see any
listing in Task Manager for Windows Defender. But, then, I really don't
know where to look for it.

As this problem has recently started it may be something
other than Defender that's causing the slow-down.
To change the scan at boot up go into Services and in the
Windows Defender Service try changing the 'Startup type'
to Automatic(delayed) to see if that changes anything.

"MSACUI.exe" is the process in your task manager.

Under Tools | Options should be your settings.

I do not disagree with Download-latest then Uninstall/[reboot]/Reinstall.

Usually fixes just about anything. Haven't heard of WinDef issues in Win8.

Sounds like you may have inadvertantly shut-down during an update or WinDef
process which could cause this type of corruption.

Windows 8 is sort of unique IMLTHO to previous flavors of Microsoft in its
update procedures. Many times I get a lag before I get a dialog on screen
that essentially informs me "do not shut down; windows is updating" and
then no subsequent progress bar... But for the Grace of God, I might have
looked away from this flashed message and then been in some similar
circumstances.
