View Full Version : RPC error - some questions. . .

My laptop was infected with the worm apparently as I got
the RPC error everyone's talking about. My desktop was not
infected.

I have some questions:

I do not have the 823980 update installed on either
computer -- should I go ahead and install it on both of them?

I deleted the msblast.exe file off the laptop, but there
was no entry for it in the MSCONFIG / Startup thing to
uncheck. Why is that?

I enabled the windows firewall for my internet connection,
and when I connected immediately after, the RPC error
didn't happe -- it did not shut down. This was before I
deleted the msblast file too. Does that mean my computer's OK?

Thanks to anyone who can explain what is going on in simple
terms -- I would like to know, but I just don't understand
the explanations given by the microsoft website.

Thanks in adance

You need to download the patch, firewall if needed, and worm removal
instructions, if needed. Then disconnect from the Internet.

Patch, firewall, and clean. Rescan for the worm. If clean, then reattach
to Internet.

Your system is very vulnerable while the worm is present, even if you
patch. Patching only stops the initial attack path. Once you are
infected, your computer is subject to further compromise if you stay
connected to the net and will likely become a participant in the
upcoming denial-of-service attacks that compromised machines will launch
in a day or two.
