View Full Version : Will all older versions of Windows be FREE after the release of Windows10?

June 11th 15, 11:52 PM
A local computer store told me that Windows 10 will be released in July,
and it will be completely FREE. How MS can make any money giving away
their new OS for free is beyond me, but I'm sure there are strings
attached and they will find other ways to make their fortune.

But, this wont affect me, since I have no interest in Windows 10, or
even Windows 8.x. In fact, I've pretty much gotten off the upgrade
"boat" and am slowly getting rid of the internet, with the intent to be
rid of the internet completely by the end of the year.

After that, my two computers (XP laptop and Win98 desktop) will be
solely used for word processing, photo editing and storage, and playing
music, without being connected to the internet. My only use of the
internet will be for email, which I can do with my old flip phone.

However, I got to thinking about MS giving away Windows 10. Since they
are giving away their latest OS for free, then they should also give
away their older OS's for free too. Meaning that XP, Vista, Windows 7,
and Windows 8.x should all be free too. (Windows 3.x, 95, 98, ME, and
2000 are already free, since they dont require activation).

I'm only asking this because I'd like to try Windows 7, but am not
willing to spend money on it, since I highly doubt I will use it. I just
would like to see what it does, on a spare computer, which will soon be
wiped clean, and sold on Craigslist, along with all of my spare computer
items. So, this will just be an experiment and will not actually be used
for anything. Therefore, I wont pay for it!

This is a nice fantasy, and not much more.

They are only offering a free upgrade from Win 7 or 8.

Apparently this guy, (who is the owner of this computer store), knows
nothing, because I told him I'm using XP and Win98, and he told me to
wait until some date in July, and upgrade to Windows 10. When I told him
I'm not willing to give MS any more money, he said "Windows 10 will be
free, give it a try".

For people without qualifying OS (Win7 SP1 or Win8.1 are
needed for the free upgrade), you will be able to buy
boxed Windows 10 software for a fee. A fee consistent
with all the other versions of Windows. While the
public relations information implied "feeding frenzy",
the release is definitely more controlled than that.

Example - Windows 10 Pro, available Aug 1st $150.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832588491

The Windows 10 Core/Home/noname version is cheaper, but is
still "big money".

So to repeat

WinXP SP3 --> Windows 10 Paid upgrade, at least $100 Check your CPU.
Vista SP2 --> Windows 10 Paid upgrade, at least $100 Check your CPU.

Win7 SP1 --> Windows 10 Free upgrade, offer valid for one year only!
Win8.1 --> Windows 10 Free upgrade, offer valid for one year only!

In the case of older computers, the processor may not meet the
pre-requisites for installation. So physically, the installation
may fail to take effect. Even running the Upgrade Assistant
technology in advance (which uses .NET) is problematic for a
WinXP user. So it's an uphill battle.

If you wish to carry out a basic test, that an older
computer could use Windows 10, you'd try a preview copy.
*Install this on a blank empty hard drive* . Do not overwrite
your perfectly valid and working OS with it! This is a
large download, only to be disappointed. You definitely
don't download this on dialup, that's for sure. Even in
town, someone would notice if you downloaded this. It's huge.

I think only three computers in my house can run that.
The others can not. One of the computers is too slow, leaving
the other two. The Win10 Preview runs on the fastest computer
(I'm running 10130), and there's really not a good reason to
leave it running (boring!). You've been warned.

I'll give them $20. $25 at the most.

As others have said, it's only free as an upgrade from 7.1 and 8.1.
Otherwise, you've got to pay for it - either directly, or as part of the
cost of any new PC that comes with it (and, in UK anyway, you won't find
any new PC _not_ coming with a version of Windows from any of the major
high street retailers, including supermarkets).

(Does it handle attachments? Your children will want to send you videos
of your grandkids, even if you don't want them.)

"Not requiring activation" isn't the same as "free" of course! It just
means trivial to pirate.

I think you can install 7 and it will run for a while (couple of weeks?
Ask in, or just read the archives of, alt.windows7.general) without
requiring activation - long enough to perhaps play with it. (I can't
remember if you have to jump through hoops to make this happen; I think
so, but they are trivial ones.) I haven't, as an XP user, found anything
7 gives me that is essential _to me_, though it has a few nice touches.
(I have a 7 machine, mainly for supporting friends , and I use 7 at work. I can't say I've encountered much
about it I _don't_ like, either; basically it's very similar to XP, _for
me_.)[i]

Free to download, but not free to use forever.

Can't get rid of the internet, there. But you can stay away from it as much
as you can.

None of previous Windows are made free. It's very unlikely to happen, like
most commercial products. Especially if they're made by big companies.

If you just want to see and try it then you can - assuming your PC can
handle it. Use it for the given limited time until it refuses to function
because you haven't paid any subscription. And of course, no need to pay
unless you got addicted to it.

I hardly believe a windows xp computer has enough hardware to run windows
10 without any issue (speed, drivers, etc)
