View Full Version : I forgot how to do this.........

July 13th 15, 01:21 AM
When I insert a Flash Drive on XP Pro Sp3. I always get this popup
asking me "What do you want to do", then I am supposed to select OPEN
PHOTOS, RUN PROGRAM, DO NOTHING etc.

I selected DO NOTHING and clicked the box at the bottom that says
"Always do this". But I am still getting that annoying popup. When I
insert a flash drive on Win98, nothing happens. I want XP to do the same
thing. (in other words, quit bugging me). I know to go to the drive and
do what I want, without being annoyed by popups!

I know this can be turned off, and did it before, but forgot how....
How do I change this?

Thanks

In TweakUI, uncheck the two boxes under
My Computer -> Autoplay -> Types. I'm
not certain that's the full fix, but I have it
set that way and haven't disabled autoplay
on a per-drive basis, but I never see any
kind of popup for anything.

Does not work here. Win XP Pro all updates.

Does this require a boot too?

..Reg files do not Merge.
Get error

Registry Editor

Cannot import E:\ThisPC\AutoPlay
Disable\Disable_AutoPlay_for_Removable_Media_Drive s.reg: The specified
file is not a registry script.

You can only import binary registry files from within the registry
editor.

The files are available from this site, as the header
in the file mentioned. You don't have to type them in,
do any pasting or anything. My purpose in showing the
content, is for learning purposes only.

Merging registry files is only going to work, with the
right permissions.

Generally, packages in forums like that, assume a user
account belonging to Administrator Group. If you're using
a Limited Account, are on a locked down corporate machine,
you would not expect "anything practical" to run on the computer.
Some people are given "kiosk" machines at work, which are
just about useless. You might as well go to the public
library and use their "Internet Cafe" machines :-)

The other possibility, is the registry keys in question
are owned by TrustedInstaller. Which is again, a
form of misery invented by Microsoft. The "easy" way, is
to use your administrator capabilities, to change the ownership
of such a key. I have uncovered a second way to do it, but
the ingredients involve trusting a software developer
you don't know. (Programs scan clean, but that doesn't
mean anything.)

So things like the above, are for people with a
default setup of a home installation (you installed
the OS yourself, it made your "Bill" account
a member of Administrators Group, and so on).
