View Full Version : (OT) Laptop CD drive always popping out

July 29th 15, 12:06 AM
The CD drive door on my laptop is always popping out. Just the slightest
contact to it, and out it comes. One of these days it's going to get
broken off, since I regularly use my computer in my car. Is there any
way to lock it? The computer is a Lenovo T43.

Since I rarely use CDs, I put duct tape on it for now, but I'm hoping
there is a better way.

Absolutely. When you crash the car, make sure a telephone pole rests
against the CD tray.

Absolutely. Gorilla tape is black and looks much more stylish than duck
tape.

That is annoying.
When I got the new company Lenovo a few weeks ago one of the first things
I did was grind down the CD button with my Dremel tool.
It solved the problem.

If you don't regularly use the optical drive, just remove it.

Or, figure out a way to shim the drive, so the latch remains
engaged.

Do I have to explain everything?
I do NOT use while I'm driving.....

I use it at WIFI places and while parked, like McDonalds parking lot.

Most places dont have power outlets and my laptop battery is weak. In
the car I plug into an inverter.

I didnt realise how easy it is to remove it, till I just tried. That's
probably the easiest solution. I never use it in the car, just at home.
Actually the last time I used it was to reinstall Windows about a year
ago.

I could probably drill a tiny hole in the plastic part of the case and
into the tray of the CD, where it's just plastic, then insert a tiny
screw, but as little as I use it, removal is probably the best.

I guess that would solve the problem. Having that button sticking out on
the side where people grab the computer, is stupid. But I guess the
engineers never have to use the stuff they design.

Same with my LG flip phone. There are buttons on the edge, which cause
the phone to beep constantly when it's in my pocket. So, I have to shut
it off all the time except when I make a call. More than once I thought
of gluing those buttons, because all their functions are available from
the menu inside the phone anyhow. I can only ask WHY they put those
buttons right where we have to hold the phone, adn where they are
getting bumped and rubbed all the time it's in my pocket.

On the right side of the T43 we have the optical drive and what’s called
the D-SUB port (can be used to carry analogue video signals to a monitor).
With this configuration the optical drive comes in the form of a CD-RW/DVD-
RW drive. This bay is actually completely modular and is called the
UltraBay by IBM. You can use the UltraBay to put in an extra battery, a
different type of optical drive or even a sled that contains a secondary
hard drive that is possible to boot to.

just remove the CD drive and insert a second battery or another HDD or
leave it empty: in the original packaging there should be a "piece of
plastic" to be used to seal the hole once you remove the drive

It extends to the parking lot! Good to know.

One night in Dallas I drove around my brother's expensive n'hood with
rather short driveways, and I didn't get a wifi signal anywhere. I had
to drive halfway up his 40 foot driveway to get a signal at his house.
But it was an old laptop built without wifi (used a plug in card).
Maybe I cna do better with my current one.

I have several old LG flip phones.
Again it was Dremel to the rescue.

Those old LG flip phones are very tough.
I take 2 or 3 with me when I travel for work.
Drop them on concrete and they don't break.
In sweaty pants pockets all day, no problems.
Minus 33F to +116F and they still work.
I've dropped them in mud puddles and toilets.
Wash them with alcohol, dry them off, and they still work.
