View Full Version : screensaver goes on for no reason, won't go off.

This is the least important problem.

My screensaver goes on for no reason, won't go off.

Usally when I leave the non-CRT monitor alone, it goes black. That's
fine. Today I found the screensaver on, and it went off when I clicked
the right mouse key, my usual method. That's fine.

But sometimes, rarely, but the only time I usually see the screensaver,
when I'm sitting here, even if I did something 30 seconds ago, the
screensaver goes on. And no use of they keyboard or mouse will get
rid of it. I have to use cntl-alt-delete, and that makes it go away
and stay away for a long time. Then separately I have to close the
task manager.

Don't put much time into this, but do you know the answer.

It's the kind of topic, "you could write a book". The
subsystem is a bottomless pit of surprises.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/463813/programmatically-prevent-windows-screensaver-from-starting

There's the obvious stuff (Display : screensaver, Power options),
but there are also likely to be registry controls as well.
And at one time, there was a multimedia control, so if
a video was playing, it would stop the screensaver from
triggering for the duration of the movie. That solves
the "no input from user" problem while watching a 2 hour movie.

And screensaving and screenlocking, might be two separate
topics. The control-alt-delete is a method of triggering
password input, when a system is locked. There is even a setting
where you can insist that a password can only be entered
after using control-alt-delete. It has something to do
with "sessions" and attempts by various pieces of software
to open their own session and capture your keyboard input.
The control-alt-delete is supposed to take you back
to session 0.

I wouldn't know where to start, except to "buy that book
on the topic" :-) I wouldn't want to have to fix a problem
like that, because where do you look for evidence ? It's
not like there is a screensaver.log ...

There might be a hot-key to manually trigger the
screensaver. And you're hitting the combo, whatever
it is, by accident.

See, a bottomless pit...

Speaking from XP, but the same may apply - though sorry, I don't know
the solution:

I think, when the system decides to start the screensaver, the process
involves a few actions before the 'saver actually runs: task switching
(taking focus off the task in hand), sometimes screen blanking,
sometimes even resolution changing. I sometimes feel that this process
has started, and my actions then have a battle to interrupt it. Do you
find the situation you describe occurs - albeit only shortly after you
did something - but when that something followed a pause that _was_ long
enough for your 'saver to cut in?

I use some 'savers from previous eras (via utilities that allow me to do
so), and some of my savers - I think mainly those ones, but I can't be
sure - are definitely difficult to stop once they've decided to start,
though I can't remember one that couldn't be stopped eventually (though
sometimes I may have had to use C-A-D, I can't remember). So you are not
alone!

The solution is not to use screensavers - with non-CRT monitors, their
original reason (it's in the name) is now hardly valid. But I _like_
them, so like you will continue to use them! (I have a utility [in the
form of a saver itself, called cycle] - itself one of the ones that
requires bodging - that lets me cycle round a list of them.) I like them
partly because I admire and/or am amused by them, and partly because
they do wake me up from a catatonic state sometimes (i. e. the 'saver
cuts in and it startles me out of a reverie).

A 'right' and an 'obligation' are two entirely different concepts.
