View Full Version : Recent Documents

I recently reinstalled XP SP3 but notice that now any image files that I have viewed using the
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no longer show up in my list of My Recent Documents, whereas they
used to.

What setting changes this behaviour?

I have TweakUI installed but cannot see the setting in there.

Have you changed the way you open them? It has always been my
understanding that if you opened the application (Word, IrfanView,
picture and fax viewer, whatever), and then opened files from within
that, that they _don't_ get into the "Recent" list: they only get in
there if you open them by double-clicking on them from Explorer, so that
they opened with the default application associated with that extension.
(Well, in XP and later, there's more to it than just the extension for
some sorts of file.) Also, have you changed - or not set up if other
than the default - the "open this sort of file with" setting, since your
reinstall?

.... but if the above is all that's going to be there in your signature,
best to turn it off altogether (which is a setting in Avast; it's been
mentioned here before, but if you can't find it, ask, and an Avast user
who knows will tell you.) No point in (a) advertising when you don't
wish to (b) telling porkies anyway (this wasn't an email, it was a
newsgroup post).

I open jpegs/bitmaps/etc. by double-clicking on them from Explorer, which in the past did get those
files added to the list of recently opened documents.

I have just used the "Open With..." and "Always use the select program..." option. Now the files are
appearing in the list. Thanks for the tip, which I had forgotten.

You're welcome. After doing that once, do they now add to the Recent
list even if you double-click on them from explorer?

it is easy to make up a lie, but it can take much more time and effort to
convincingly refute it. - Patrick Cockburn, i, 2016-9-24

Yes, they do now.
