Hi,
Many times, I have always used the toll free telephone number to
"Activate" WinXP. This is a fully automatic system. You do not talk
to a live person.
Yesterday, I did it again after I replace a hard drive in an old
desktop computer.
My Method:
I select the telephone method, then United States for location.
On a piece of paper, I write the 6 digit number groups in a vertical
column. This reduces the chance of making an error when entering
those numbers during the activation procedure.
I call the toll free number from the display. After listening to
messages, and saying "Windows" for the Activation prompt,
in response to each group prompt, I enter those numbers
on my telephone keypad.
If I made no errors, I hear a message to get ready to
enter numbers in a series of slots on my computer screen.
Instead, I write down on the same paper in a vertical column, the
numbers I am told to enter into each slot. If I make an error, I
simply say, "repeat" to hear the 6 digit number group again.
After I hang up the telephone, I go to the computer and enter those number
groups I wrote down. I have done this many times and never had a problem.
