View Full Version : No more full screen crap?

Good day.

For those who do have Win10Tp, is Microsoft DONE with annoying
full-screen "apps" on the desktop? Like the full-screen picture viewer,
the full-screen control panel, etc?

I recently had to install 8.1 @ work, and having to Alt-F4 every time I
double-click a bitmap is really annoying, not to mention that I *need*
to be able to see the bitmap AND some other window at the same time,
which I can no longer do (hello mspaint, here we come)...

Thank you.
Best Regards,

All of that can be changed. You can set default programs, you can set the size for most programs.
Browser for example, if you set the screen size then hit file exit, it will remember the setting. Hitting the X does
not. Right click a bitmap and say open with and pick the program of choice or browse and check the default box, done.
If it's a new install of windows when you open a file a little popup should pop up in the upper right corner saying
something like "there are other programs that open this file type" and you can click there to pick another one.

It just takes time, MS did not set the right defaults for everyone. But you can.

Ms Penguin is always ready to accept people who feel the need to change.

Have you done your test install yet ?

Preferably, not on a computer with important files on it or anything.
Don't install over top of your Win8.

*******

I just checked a Win10 Metro application, and ugh, pretty funny.
Yes, when I clicked it, it took the whole screen. Up in
the right hand corner, it has the box icon, to make it
resize to non-full-screen. So I can "escape" without Alt-F4.

The one I was using was some "Music" application, and it will
allow you to resize the window width. But the height can't be
changed much at all. So while it doesn't occupy the whole
screen, it comes pretty close to filling the whole thing.
Effectively, you can "peel back" some screen area to do other
work, by making the Music App less wide. But it's not like the
contents of the window resize - the contents don't scale
so you get tiny fonts and tiny controls. Whatever base size
the application designer wants, stays put. When you attempt to make
the window small enough, some text appears in the window saying
it wants to be wider.

So it's still a waste of screen real estate. Compare that
Music App with the giant graphic in it, versus say a copy
of WinAmp. I think I'll be picking the WinAmp. It's either that,
or I'll have to run out and buy one of those new 4K screens :-)

Good idea, I'll set default for BPM,JPG,PNG to mspaint. Kinda makes me
sad tho, the picture viewer in Win7 was really enough, it's the only OS
where so far I haven't felt the need to install trusty old ACDSee 3.1.
Now stuck with 8.1, need it again :-(

Yes, it does; X is the same as File->Exit as far as remembering
position, @ least in Win7...

Ya, will do...

Thanks.

But will it remember that and open as a window next time?

Gods it's annoying; I dont run Windoze on a phone, I use a desktop
computer. The phone market will stabilize one day, and all that "oh
look, lets go here, infinite growth; lets make everything just like a
phone" will be for nothing and we'll be stuck with sub-standard crap
everywhere. For someone like me who's used "MUI" apps on Amiga, where
everything resizes automatically no matter how complex the UI is, this
Metro **** is really annoying...

I'm used to DeliTracker (Amiga) but same thing; never got around to
installing a track player on Windoze (so many to chose from, I get
analysis paralysis)...

Windows Phot Viewer is still an option.

So use it? Photo Gallery (which is basically the big-brother) is also
available from
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows-live/photo-gallery

If you support it, you might want to learn how to use it. Modern apps
don't have to be full screen, they can do a 50/50 split.

You can also use classic desktop apps, or adjust your file associations
to always open classic desktop versions of apps rather than using the
Modern app version.

There is also a hardware dependency, as to what screen options
are available. My 1280x1024 screen doesn't have the same (snap)
options as your larger screen does. And users with two monitors
get more options than the rest of us.

Ya, I saw that when I shift-right-clicked :-) I then went into defaults
and gave Photo Viewer all its defaults.

Thanks!

How do I make it go 50/50 once I'm in full-screen?

Well, thanks for the Link :-) Now I have to watch for an hour (might as
well if I have to support this thing).

Ah so we can grab it, ok, will try this at work (I'll have to start some
"app" as I've since associated all pictures to the Picture Viewer and
not to the app).

Not a problem there.

Hahaha, this is funny, yes, we can make Apps 1/2 screen by grabbing the
top of the screen and going to the side, but the whole thing REMAINS
FULL-SCREEN: the App moves to 1/2 the screen, but I do NOT see the
desktop on the other 1/2 of the screen, it's just blank (presumably I
can run multiple apps at the same time and see 1 take-up the other 1/2
of the screen). Not what I was looking for.

Windows 10 is supposed to be able to run "Apps" in Windows, I sure hope
that's the default behaviour, otherwise it's totally useless to me...

Nevermind, I just started watching those Windows 8 videos, I can click
on desktop once the app is 1/2 screen... ;-)

When you see the Win10 TP behavior for the "windowed" Metro app,
you're gonna be ****ed :-) I tried with the Win10 music player
and was not impressed. I couldn't make it small enough, without
the window being relatively useless to me.

It's basically giving us a "windowed Metro" thing, to shut us up.
It's not designed to be practical.

I suspect it will be practical on very large monitors, or larger
multi-monitor setups. It's not really going to do much of use for
smaller screens since Modern apps are designed to assume a fixed minimum
screen size.
