View Full Version : Windows 10 Upgrade Error

Hi guys there!
I tried to upgrade Win8.1 to Win10 yesterday and this morning but after I
configured the settings for the new Windows after the installing has
finished, my computer showed the screen said that "Please wait" but nothing
happened then. That screen on the monitor for 5 hours but nothing happened,
the new Windows didn't install and I've rolled back to Win8.1. Do anyone
here know the problem?

Thanks,
Eric

At this point an upgrade to Win 10 is something best left to experimenters.

That said when Win 10 is officially released and one wants to perform an
update, it's best to have no applications running prior to starting the
update process.

Also make sure everything is backed up first in the event the update
fails but is not rolled back

And as we all know or should know, Windows 10 is a Technical Preview and not a final release, thus it's quite possible
it has bugs in it. Much like any Beta software, you run a risk. My vote is you were the one in a hundred that lost
the bet.

Which is probably good. I don't know what is going to happen when Win10
TP expires on April 15th and the user is locked out of their system. I
have not heard for sure if they will be given an option to purchase it
or whether it will be a free upgrade. I know MS is not in the habit of
giving out free operating systems.

Usually, there is a platform update before using something like that.
The Preview installer should figure that out, if anything is needed.

Your AV should be disabled.

Now, this might be part of the problem/

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/preview-faq#faq=tab3

"Important

If you're running Windows 8.1, Windows 8, or Windows 7 and your
system language isn't English, Chinese Simplified, or Brazilian Portuguese,
you can only keep your personal files when you upgrade. You won't be
able to keep your apps or Windows settings."

Which means "installing over top" isn't really buying you
all that much. The OS might as well be installed
in a separate partition.

You could:

1) Create a new empty NTFS partition.
2) See if you can get the installer to install into that empty
NTFS partition.
3) The new boot menu should show Windows 8 and Windows 10.
Windows 10 boot manager, now runs the boot process.
4) When April 15 comes, you may be able to set the Active
flag on the Windows 8 boot partition (whatever that is),
and get Windows 8 to be in control again. The Win8 boot files
and Win8 BCD should still be on the Windows 8 partition. If
it doesn't boot, using your Windows 8 DVD may be able
to repair the boot stuff so it works again.

For my Windows 10 Preview, I installed on a clean disk on
a separate computer. There is no way that preview can ruin
any of my stuff :-) Short of sending a worm through the LAN...

Yep, I heard those rumors that Win10 might come out free and especially to TP testers, one of the reasons I signed up.

I have done a clean install on a couple of different desktops and an
upgrade to a Windows 7 Latitude E6410 on our domain. Each of the
installs went smoothly, well relatively anyway. I was really surprised
the upgrade install took over windows 7. The only thing I had to do
subsequently or that was broken was to install a special windows 10
version of Remote Server and Admin Tools as AD Administration was broken.

If you have issues with an upgrade install you might want to install it
on a separate partition as a clean install and dual boot. It should
create boot entry for both installs. I actually just installed Windows 7
after the fact on my home computer and it created a boot entry for both
the Windows 10 and Windows 7.

I've seen such articles but have not seen anything from Microsoft itself.

My /guess/ is that if they do give it out free, the user will have to
pay for applications and/or additional features. Like I said ...nothing
but a guess on my part.

Notwithstanding the rumors, I very much doubt that it will be free to
anyone.

Yes Dual boot works fine. I installed it on a 128GB SSD and the boot
menu is automatically created giving Win 8.1 Or Win Tech Preview as
choices.

Agreed.

I'd say that at best the price will be lower than usual, or lower than
usual for a special offer period of maybe a few months.

It will be just as free as anything else MS has sent to market.
