Will upgrades be free?

I have Win7 ultimate & Windows 8.1 and I heard there's a time window
after the release of Windows10 when the upgrade is free. Is this so? I
installed all mine from DVDs. Of course I'll need Bitlocker.

If you can find it documented, I'm sure a milliion+ other people would like to know. I myself. I haven't seen anything
but then I'm getting tired of the speculations.

It's been bandied about a good bit on the other Windows NGs, if not this
one, and also in public media, IIRC. I think I just saw it mentioned in
PCWorld digital edition (there's no paper edition any more).

Free upgrade to W10 from W8 and from W7 during the first year after
release.

Windows 10 may launch in September 2015.

We may know more about this "deal", to understand
whether "it's a trap" or a good deal. I suspect
it's a trap. At the current time, the word is that
the free version of Windows you'll be getting,
you will have no control over Windows Update. It'll
just throw in the updates and reboot your machine,
when ever *it* decides is a good time. (Even with the
24 hour delay option for the reboot, that's not enough.)

We still don't know whether a Microsoft Account is
mandatory with Win10. Or whether Cloud integration
guarantees some of our files end up stored on
a Microsoft server.

There are *lots* of questions you would be
asking about this deal. Don't just "sheep it"...
