I got sick and tired of waiting for the latest full version to install
(in a VM, admittedly, but with plenty of room) after about 8 hours on a
good connection that I deleted the whole shooting match in a fit of
pique. The download time was long, but not too long, it was the
installation time that annoyed me most. I may reinstall it when the iso
is available as that should be quicker, but as I am never going to use
it myself in any real usage situation (at my age Windows 7 will "see me
out", as my Grandma used to say) I may just leave it.

Before the next update, you could try:

1) Use Disk Cleanup, look for the advanced system
cleaning options (removes things like Windows.old)
2) Disable Windows Defender.
3) Disable Search Indexer. That has a tendency to
restart on its own. The service definition says
something about "three retries" before it stops
for good. Check in Task Manager that it's really dead.

Now, start the run stage of the update, and see
if it takes less than eight hours.

The one good thing about running in a Virtual Machine is that when you
delete it, everything gets deleted, so if I install the iso into a new
VM it will be a clean install. I'll bear your points in mind if I try to
update the new version.
