Have you installed your "virtual machine additions" ?

Some VM environments, come with a driver package
for the virtual graphics, to get hardware acceleration.
I haven't gone back to VirtualBox yet to test it. In VPC2007,
it's pretty hard to get this working for Linux VMs, but there
are Additions for Windows. For VPC2007, there's a separate
package for Linux, and only for the "commercial" Linux distros.
I never got that option to work.

3.5 hours to download x64 ISO (3,782,055,936 bytes)

About 30 minutes or so to install.
About 39 minutes if you include small
cleanup tasks (settings to correct).

bcdedit /set {current} description "Win10 TP 10074"
powercfg -h off
cleanmgr # (Remove Windows.old)

I think the video driver installed earlier is still there.

There are currently two dialogs on the computer "Device Setup".
The LAN LED is going crazy, and something is being downloaded.
It's been running for a while. I *sure* hope it isn't doing
another 3.5GB download for fun.

Wouldn't it be neat if the OS actually displayed
information that said exactly what it was doing ?
I feel like disconnecting the LAN connector
again, and just letting the stuff fail.

I'm using Oracle Virtual Box.

Don't have additions installed but when I went to check my settings see
that video RAM was set quite low. Increased it and though still a bit
sluggish...somewhat better now.

I recommend installing the Virtualbox Guest Additions. That will
install a video and mouse driver that will make the experience smoother
and faster.

It will still be sluggish, though.

And finally I think it's done... looks like 2.5 gigs of downloads 65.6
MB sent ... took a couple of hours total to collect and rebuild/install
10074 I don't remember what hard drive I used .. it might have been a
5400 rpm one which probably slowed things down considerably.

Well I am doing this simply so that when Win10 is released and I need to
support it, I will have a clue as to how it works.

I also have a reference installation of Win8.1 (in a VM) simply so I can
refer to it if I need to help someone.

I did have "additions" installed at one time but am now using Oracle
version 4.3.26 which apparently does not need them

I'm using that version, and it does need the Guest Additions, otherwise
the mouse and Shared Folders feature won't work properly. Where did you
hear that it doesn't?

I went to Oracle's home page and see no Guest Additions avail for 4.3.26

I guess I would need them for shared folders

Me too, 11min, I was wondering what the time problem was until the install. Took another 70 minutes to setup, reboot 4
times and finish.

Well at least the start menu works now.

Playing with Spartan and moving bookmarks around and I've lost the entire favorites bar. I put 2 back on it but if
you got into that horrible bookmarks manager it shows I have a whole list of folders and bookmarks on the favorites bar,
but still only 2 show. Guess more work is needed there now.

Start menu doesn't work here.

I did an "upgrade" install from the downloaded ISO, over 10041.
The menu worked maybe once or twice. Now, the icon changes color
when clicked, but no menu shows up.

I can right-click the start, and access things like Command Prompt.
That continues to work OK.

To do an application test, I navigated to Program Files manually
and launched a program from there. The program eventually
crashed, but I think this is a program problem. The program
crashes, after using a lot of memory.

Since the menu didn't work (the main menu), to do a Shutdown,
I used my friend the "Alt-F4" hotkey combo. Which still works.
Click the desktop background, then enter Alt-F4.

They are hard to find. I have this location bookmarked:

http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/

Normally, when you upgrade Virtualbox, it will offer to download the
guest additions, but I've found that sometimes it doesn't. I will
always have already downloaded them. Also the Extension Pack.

I now have the guest additions installed but they are not working.

Device manager says there is a problem.

Guest additions are ALWAYS included with the main download.

You must be confusing the addition pack (USB2 support) with the guest
additions.

Guest additions come in the form of an ISO file and are installed on the
guest. Press Host+D to insert the guest additions ISO in the guest's
virtual CD/DVD drive.

The extension pack is an EXE file and can be installed on the host of
required.

Sorry confued it MYSELF there.

I incorrectly called the extension pack the addition pack at one point.

Can you go to Add/Remove and remove the Additions you tried ?

Is your VirtualBox up to date ?

If you update to 4.3.26, maybe you could try this one ?

http://dlc-cdn.sun.com/virtualbox/4.3.26/VirtualBox-4.3.26-98988-Win.exe

That link is what I get when I try it here. You might be able to
try the link formulated this way, and get a US content distribution server.
Or just drill down from the top level here (like it was an FTP server),
and find the right one.

http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.26/VirtualBox-4.3.26-98988-Win.exe

It's possible none of this is going to work.

http://superuser.com/questions/819757/installing-virtualbox-guest-additions-on-windows-10

The thing is, they keep changing the graphics standard
on Windows. It might be WDDM1.3 by now. Back in WinXP it
was WDM, and they changed the memory model with regard to
the split between graphics memory and system memory.
And then the driver was called WDDM. And the "rev"
on WDDM keeps incrementing with Windows OS. Which
helps break things like the GuestAdditions.

Maybe Oracle doesn't have the video driver
ready at this point, and that's why it is failing.
I don't really think changing the Compatibility
setting on the installer is going to change the
outcome. It's probably just the driver not being
the right "flavor" for the job.

And the purpose of this, is to get 3D acceleration,
so things aren't so "sluggish". Windows 10 can run
without it, because Windows 10 can also run on
a vanilla frame buffer (i.e. any video card for
which no driver exists, so the card has to be run
in VESA mode - you can tell it's in VESA mode
because the screen resolution is 1024x768). That's
what you would traditionally call the "fallback
video driver", that makes the screen work even
with no ATI/NVidia driver installed. My FX5200
which is no longer supported, runs at 1024x768 in
Windows 8, and I had to replace it with a new
$50 video card so I could "move forward".

Update on the menu problem:

KB3061161, incoming, is intended to fix the menu. It's possible
by me pulling the network plug part way through the "fun", that
this buggered up the WU activities.

It is not available for download from the Microsoft site. The
page for the update, says to "get it from Windows Update". I
like the files to be available manually, because I've had a much
better track record with manually hammered in updates.

Mine was failing to install. And with no manual download
option, I've had one hand tied behind my back.

I tried the Windows Update troubleshooter, it got an
error and wouldn't do anything.

I went looking for the Fixit page on the Microsoft
site, and I think I might have tried a "...diagcab"
of some sort.

After I did that, the network LED started flashing,
the update downloaded again, and this time the
installation ran to completion. I was about
to smack the system around with one of these

dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth

but it turned out to be unnecessary, as the problem
was resolved after enough "futzing" with the
untouchable Windows Update subsystem in Win10. I
can see when the real release system comes out,
this is going to be a nightmare. The working with
one hand tied behind your back - who needs this ?

*******

With KB3061161 in place, the Start menu came back. I can
left click and get the regular menu with the
pile of tiles stuffed in it. And the right click
gives you things like Command Prompt.

I also turned on the "transparency" feature around
the edge of the menu. It's possible you'll need
hardware acceleration in the VM environment, to play
with this. Unlike Windows 7, where transparency is
all over the place, this instance is limited to the menu.
Some people will find this turned on for them, but
this recipe is for everyone else (like me).

Ah, found the problem - this version clashes with Classic Start -
without which it is unusable anyway. Hmmm, there's probably a way round it.

Hi Paul,

THANK YOU!

New product key too: 6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF

-T

Me thinks a wipe and full reinstall. Would love to see if
it eats up my full 40 GB dynamically expanding virtual
hard drive again.

Also want to see if they are up to their usually trickery to
avoid a local account.

No - the Guest Additions is an ISO, and the Extension Pack has the file
extension "vbox-extpack", which is associated only with Virtualbox.

I've never understood what the Extension Pack does, exactly, but it
never seems to hurt anything, so I keep installing it.

I installed it into a 16GB virtual disk, and it either used 6GB, or left
6GB, can't remember which.

I had to say it was a 'company owned computer' to allow it to create a
local account, when I said it was a 'personally owned computer', it
seemed to insist on logging on with an MS account - I didn't try with it
isolated from the internet.

Hi Andy,

Where it starts to eat you alive is when it starts downloading
and installing new releases. As far as I can tell, it creates
a copy of the iso like file it downloads for twice the
space, then it rename the windows directory to windows.old
and installs an entirely new windows directory.

The time I tried to get rid of windows.old, I have to boot
into a Linux Live CD to whack it.

M$ is being tricky. For a personally owned computer. At the
account sign up screen screen, select:
"Or Create new account", "Sign up" (gray box)

Then, "Connect my account Later"

The normal, local account creation screen will then appear

And I thought you were some kind of IT guy ?

The policies differ, from one OS to the next, but
the latest policy is:

1) Automatic removal of Windows.old after 30 days.
Do an upgrade install, and 30 days later, if you
haven't tended to it, Windows removes Windows.old itself.
Obviously, this has pros and cons.

2) Windows.old is removed by Disk Cleanup, by ticking
the appropriate box. In my case, right after 10074
upgrade installation (USB stick, setup.exe), I
used "cleanmgr.exe" to get rid of it. The Disk Cleanup
dialog indicated a saving of around 13GB.

3) While you can remove Windows.old with Linux, it's silly
to do it that way when Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) has that
capability. You might make the argument that you could
remove it faster from Linux - but the test I did in
10074, it wasn't one of those 60 minute long deletion
exercises. It completed in less time than that. By the
time I booted a Linux CD, and tended to the matter, then
booted back, I doubt I would have saved any time. There was
a time, when Disk Cleanup was "such a clunker", I would have
been tempted to use Linux.

And modern systems (not the ones we're testing on here),
will be using WIM-boot. For which the upgrade procedure,
the "saved" file situation, will be different. I'm not
aware of anyone here, doing Preview installs on a
WIM-boot tablet, so information will be scarce. Microsoft
knows they have to deal with a 32GB storage device, with user
files on it, so space is limited.

It turned out, the two weird looking icons, and rather large
dialog boxes, were for the "dual heads" of the video card. One
large driver package should be downloaded, then used twice (once
per head), to load the video driver. I suppose Microsoft was
using this as a test case of automated driver updating. My video
card was ATI HD6450 (el cheapo video).

Hi Paul,

Did not know about the 30 day thing. Thank you!

My use of tools differs from that of a standard user.
So, some of the things I do may seem a bit odd to you.

I haven't had the best of luck at times with Disk
Cleanup. But, usually when that happens, a lot of
other things are wrong too. And bear in mind, I tend
to look for trouble with the previews so I can learn
how to cope with them. And I only get called to
customer sites after they have given up trying
to fix it themselves.

On my virtual machine, it is so ridiculously easy
to mount a Live CD's ISO. And, they boot in a
blink of an eye. Plus, it is good practice, as
I use Live CD's/USB's all the time in the field
to rescue Windows machines. I once used a Bart
PE disk to rescue Linux. Had a good chuckle over
that! (Bart PE and W7 PE take so long to boot, they
drive me nuts! But they definitely have their uses.)

Sometimes when I am doing a network project, I will
boot my Live USB just because Linux has all
the cool network goodies and it reduces the frustration
factor by about 80%. (I have a tricked out Live USB
with all my favorite tools and their documentation.)

Plus, I also do other things, such as the cleanup of
temp files while I am at it, as the file locks are
all inactive.

And, well, it is fun.

As for Disk Cleanup, I usually do it manually. (The user
has typically already tried that avenue.) I especially
go after the Temp directories manually because I want to
see who has what locked. It is a favorite hiding place
for malware/junkware. (If I can't unlock them, in comes
Live CD/USB.)

Hi Bob,

You know the cure is to either remove or upgrade
Classic Shell before upgrading. Problem: who remembers!
Plus M$ is now forcing upgraded on us, so you never know
when it will happen.

It needed a couple of settings changed to fix it - even when
re-installed after the update. If anyone had all the default settings
for Classic Shell it would have been OK, but a couple that I had
previously changed caused the problem.

I install it because it lets me choose selected USB2 devices on the host
and let the VM see them as if they were plugged in to the VM directly.

Without the Extension Pack this I think this can only be done with USB1
devices.
