Using the MediaUpgradeToolx64.exe, after downloading I get this, with a
message: We couldn't upgrade the system reserved partition.

Great stuff, no windows 10 for me then, unless I install from scratch,
which I would rather not do

Lucky you. At least, you not one of the ones who upgrades to 10, and it
won't boot.

You could dual boot to Win7 or clone the original OS and replace it if
you run into trouble. I'm stuck at the same place you are. I have to
learn how to do that clean install if I decide to go through all the
trouble as I'm pretty satisfied with 7.

What are you going to do now? Did you back up your system first?

If you know how that works please let me know. I just did some
research abut a clean install and it indicated you have to do the
upgrade first.

Yes I did backup my windows 8.1 system beforehand.
Actaully I found a web link on how to get around the problem I had, as
it is a very common problem apparently.

I followed the instructions given and lo and behold windows 10 did
actually install.
Now as it did not support my dual monitors, and my android phone, I went
back to windows 8.1.

See above post, I went back to my previous OS

This is this link I used to install windows 10:

And this the link I used to go back to windows 8:

I stopped reading that Reddit thread, as it
was making me nauseous.

Yes, you can best the **** out of System Reserved,
trash files in it, and generally have a good
time for yourself. But typically, your System
Reserved gets "broken" from doing that in the
first place. Just messing with it, sets you up
for future trouble. I can't agree with everything
I see in that Reddit thread. These are also the
people who would apply TakeOwn to the entire C:
drive, in an attempt to make Win98 out of it :-)

The nice thing about GPT, is the software can always
make another partition. The partition table is
very large, and there is room to grow. It doesn't
matter (apparently), that the user has no idea
what all the partitions are for.

There was another site which has exactly the same instructions which I
used, but can't recall what it was called.
It worked for me anyways.

A bit messy as the writer of the said page says.

Given that there are no updated drivers for my graphics card, which
currently supports 2 monitors, and windows 10 doesn't, I won't bother
yet until 10 has been out a while. Maybe by then there will be updated
drivers etc. I am not going to buy another graphics card which is
supported by win10 just for that.

IIRC, the default GPT allows 128 partitions.
